From Keith Crandall: This researcher has been unable to find a marriage license or record for Thomas B. Crandall and Elizabeth Ann Gray in the State of Maryland. Crandall Family Tradition also indicates that TBC and EAG were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which is where they probably met, and were instrumental in the founding of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church near Borland, Pleasants Co., West Virginia. According to the Maryland State Archives, from 1777 to 1941 the State of Maryland allowed individuals to marry without a license if public notice was given at a church on three Sundays prior to the marriage, a process known as "publication of banns". This may possibly explain why a marriage record cannot be found for TBC and EAG in the public records of Maryland. Review of a General Affidavit dated June 25, 1900 in the Civil War Pension Claim for Alfred Pepper (son-in-law of TBC and EAG) states that the Crandall Family Bible was in the possession of John Wesley Crandall, Sr., which may include the date of marriage for TBC and EAG. The whereabouts of this bible are unknown. |
