Facts and Events
According to Heather Ann Carpenter, Mariah J. Crandall Carpenter committed suicide in 1905 for reasons not passed down or discussed by past generations. Heather indicated that neither Mariah or her death were discussed by the Carpenter Family. Mariah is buried alone in the Newland-Janes Cemetary. Arthur G. Carpenter related a story to Heather Ann (grand-daughter) about his mother, Mariah. Mariah would tell Arthur that she was going to sneak off in the night to never return if he didn't behave properly. Concerned that his mother would leave, Arthur would tie a string around his toe and the toe of his mother so that he would wake if she made true on her story. An interesting discovery is that the wife of Jabez Carpenter, Amy Lowther Carpenter, also committed suicide three years later in 1908. |
