Civil War Pension Records No. 503519. Alice Crandall (shown as daughter of Thomas B. & Elizabeth A.Crandall) is believed to be the key that supports a sibling relationship between Thomas B. Crandall and Richard Crandall. Crandall family tradition is consistent that Thomas B. and Elizabeth A. Crandall had a daughter named Alice Crandall who married Alfred Pepper . Research of the 1850 Ohio Census shows an Alice Crandall (age 6, born in MD) living in the household of Richard and Jane Crandall. However, there was no one with the name of Alice living with Thomas B. and Elizabeth A. Crandall in 1850. Research of the 1860 Ohio Census now shows an Alice Crandall (age 16, born in MD) living in the household of Thomas B. and Elizabeth A. Crandall. Based upon age and birthplace this appears to be the same Alice Crandall that was living with Richard and Jane Crandall in 1850. Richard and Jane Crandall do NOT appear in the 1860 Ohio Census but reappear in the 1870 Ohio Census with no other persons reportedly living in their household. Alice Crandall appears in the 1870 Ohio Census as the wife of Alfred Pepper with their four (4) children. Based upon the foregoing, a theory is offered that Alice Crandall is the biological daughter of Richard and Jane Crandall and that sometime between 1850 and 1860 Alice Crandall came to live with Thomas B. and Elizabeth A. Crandall for reasons unknown. Therefore, it is believed that Alice Crandall provides the link that establishes the sibling relationship between Thomas B. Crandall and Richard Crandall. Family remembrances indicate Alfred and Alice Crandall Pepper settled in Jackson Co., WV.
