Facts and Events
John Wesley Crandall ("JWC") moved to Wood Co., West Virginia at the age of 22 where he found work as a laborer on the farm of Ingram E. Stoops. Later JWC and his brother, George A. Crandall purchased a 70-acre farm on Bull Creek located on the border of Pleasants and Wood Counties between the townships of Borland and Newlandsville, West Virginia (Source: 1910 Pleasants County Farm Map). JWC, GAC and TFC established and operated a sawmill and gristmill on their farm in 1880. JWC managed the Old Borland Springs Hotel for a brief period of time and Sinah C. Crandall was the cook. Borland Springs was an area of West Virginia withnatural hot springs. John Wesley Crandall fathered Isabel "Belle" Pegg who is shown as the adopted daughter of Mary E. Crandall and James Pegg. See Notes for Isabel Pegg for more information. Jerry Gard - JWC was co-founder of the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Review of a General Affidavit dated June 25, 1900 in Pension Claim No. 719097 for Alfred Pepper indicates that the Crandall Family Bible was in the possession of John W. Crandall. Notes kept by Dorothy Francis Campbell indicate that Deborah Higgins is the natural mother of Isabel "Belle" Pegg. See Notes for Isabel Pegg. Deborah is the sister of Rachel Higgins who married Thomas Franklin Crandall. References
