The Tiverton Rural District was comprised, originally, of 25 civil parishes surrounding the Municipal Borough of Tiverton. It was in existence from 1894 until 1974. It replaced the earlier Tiverton Rural Sanitary District which catered for the area's needs during the latter part of the 19th century. In 1974 the area covered by the rural district became part of the current Mid Devon District which also serves Tiverton, Crediton, and the former Crediton Rural District.

In 1935 five of the parishes (#4, #9, #12, #14, and #16) bordering Somerset which had formerly made up the Culmstock Rural District were absorbed into the Tiverton Rural District.
