Crediton is a town and civil parish in the Mid Devon District of Devon in England. It stands on the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road at the junction with the A3072 road to Tiverton, about 7 miles (11 km) north west of Exeter. It has a population of 6,837, increasing to 7,835 at the 2011 Census. Crediton has two electoral wards (Boniface and Lawrence) within the Mid Devon District. The combined population of these wards at the 2011 Census was 7,600. The town is situated in the narrow vale of the River Creedy, between two steep hills and is divided into two parts, the east or old town and the west or new town.
The area covered by Compton Gifford today was part of the ancient division of Devon called Crediton Hundred. It was an urban district from 1894 until 1974 when it was merged into the Mid Devon District.
