Truman is the 6th child of Stephen & Ruth Webster, the 4th son, born in 1803 in Onondaga county, but removing within a short time back to Vernon, NY in Oneida county. He married in 1829 in Vernon to Rhoda Cornelia Campbell, daughter of Stephen Campbell. According to the Webster Genealogy, Truman died in Aug of 1847 in Grafton, Monroe Co., MI. His wife & children returned to New York. Rhoda lived 20yrs longer, dying in Clarendon, NY in 1867.

In the spring of 1836 (after Sherman was born in Feb), Truman & his brother Justus & their families went west to Monroe County Michigan. They settled in Exeter township & bought land there. Possibly their brother Stephen went with them as records show he owned land there, also.

1830 Census has no listing for Truman Webster. He & Rhoda & new-born Amanda are probably living with the Campbell's.

1840 Census Exeter, Monroe Co.,MI Roll #208 p.346 Truman Webster household: 4males & 5females. The Males are 1 under 5yr; 2 are 5-10yrs & 1 is 30-40yrs(Truman would be 37) Females: 1 less than 5; 2 are 5-10yrs; 1 is 10-15yrs & 1 is 30-40yrs(Rhoda is 35). The children ages are mostly right, but there are a couple extra children. The 1840 census was taken as of Jun 1st, so there should have been only 5children(3girls-2boys) I feel sure this is our Truman even with the discrepancies. Next door is Justus Webster and his family.

Deed Book Z of the Monroe Co.,MI Courthouse records (FHL#1392554) dated 9 Nov 1836 Truman Webster purchased 40 acres from Miles Flood for $400 in Section 24 Twp 5 Range 8. His brother Justus had 40 acres next to his. His younger brother Stephen had 80 acres in Section 22 Twp.5 Range 7 (not sure that he ever lived there).

Tax Records for Exeter Twp. Monroe Co, Mi (FHL#915988) in 1845 & 1846 show Truman with 40 acres(valued at $85) next to his brother, Justus' 40 acres(valued at $150), both in Sec 24, Town 5, Range 8. In 1845 Truman paid taxes of $2.31 and Justus paid $4.26.

The newspapers in Monroe County were searched, but no obituary was found for Truman Webster. The Grafton Cemetery records were searched but Truman's name was not found. Most of Justus's family is buried there. There is a note made by the DAR when it mapped the cemetery in 1982: "The above 6 names (all Websters) were on one stone plus some had individual stones. Perhaps there were more names on the one side of the larger stone but it was broken and impossible to move." This is the loophole...possibly the stone was standing in 1905 when the Webster Genealogy was being written and Truman's name and dates were on it.

  3. Cemetery Records
    Grafton Cemetery.

Available thru the Monroe County Historical Society, it lists 8 Websters. Truman is NOT amoung them, BUT it is noted at the bottom: the above 6 names were on one stone plus some had individual stones. Perhaps there were more names on the on side of the larger stone but it was broken and impossible to move. Am guessing Truman's name was visible at one time, as the Webster Genealogy published a specific death date & said he was "buried at Grafton".
