According to the 1981 Sallie DeWitt Genealogy, Richard Columbus Vest was about 8 years old during the Civil war. Six of his brothers fought with the North, and six others fought with the South, some were little more than boys. His daughter Claudia remembers him telling her stories about hiding in the fields while Yankee soldiers passed through the family farm.

  11.   Research notes.

There is a discrepancy as to the actual place where Richard C. Vest was born. Some information I have says Knoxville, TN; while the Familysearch.org records of Mary Jo Martin (which quote the source of RVest@@ipa.net), states that he was born in Polk Co., TN.

If the 6 April 1854 birth date is correct, then he would have been 21 years old on his wedding day (soon to be 22). His marriage license states that he was 25 years old when he married. Inscription on the headstone reads, "A loving husband, A father dear, A faithful friend, lies buried here".

According to Montie Vest (Claudia's brother), the Vest family lived on a farm in Midland, Tennessee, near Chattanooga, during this period. He farmed for most of his life. After the death of his wife, he lived some time with his daughter Elizabeth Sparks, in Clovis New Mexico. When Elizabeth died of stomach cancer in 1931, he returned to Cecil, Franklin County, Arkansas to live with his youngest child, Montie Paul Vest.
