Sallie Lee DeWItt was told by her mother Claudia Vest DeWitt that Caludia's grandmother, Elizabeth Davis, was related to the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. This fact has not been documented, to my knowledge. A later project might be to investigate Jefferson Davis more completely, and see if this is true. J. Davis was born in 1808 in Todd County, Kentucky and later moved to Mississippi. he graduated West Point in 1828, became a U.S. Representative in 1845, and a U.S. Senator from 1846 to 1851. He was appointed Secretary of War under President Pierce, and was U.S. Senator again from 1857 to 1861, where he then resigned when Mississipi seceeded. Elected to the presidency of the Confederate States of America in 1861 until the Confederacy was dissolved in 1865. In February 1867 he retired to his Biloxi estate where he lived until the age of 81 and wrote, "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government", in 1881. He died in 1889.
