Personal History

Louisa Jane[3][4] Russell was born 8 July 1812.[1] After her marriage to the Marquess of Abercorn, she was titled Marchioness of Abercorn. Upon her husband's being created a Duke in 1868, she was titled Duchess of Abercorn.

Louisa was appointed by Queen Victoria to be a member (third class) of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert.[1]

James Marquess of Abercorn and Lady Louisa Jane Russell were married 25 October 1832, from Gordon Castle, at Fochabers Episcopal Church, Elginshire (later named Moray), Scotland.

James was a governor of Harrow School from 1834 to 1885, and most of his sons attended the school.

Death and Probate

The Dowager Duchess of Abercorn, then of Coates Castle, died 31 March 1905 there, in the parish of Fittleworth, co. West Sussex, England[3][4] (registered in the district of Petworth),[2] and was buried 5 April at St Michael's Church in Chenies, Buckinghamshire.[1]

On 12 May 1905,[3][4] in London, the will was proved by the executors: her sons Lord Claud John Hamilton and the Rt. Hon. Lord George Francis Hamilton GCSI MP. Effects were in the amount of £24,482 3s 8d.
