John and Wilmot joined John’s brother William, who had gone to New England in 1630. John’s name is found on the port book at Weymouth, where they departed on the Hopewell in May 1635. They first settled at Dorchester before joining William in Windsor in 1637.

The wills of both John and Wilmot mention their children Simon, Mary and Hannah. In his will, dated 4 April 1661 and proved on an unknown date, “John Rockwell of Windsor” bequeathed “my house & land with all the appurtenances unto my wife and one cow”; to “my son Simon one cow”; to “my two daughters Mary and Hannah one pound and to their children one pound, to Marie’s children to be equally divided and the like to Hannah’s children”; “my wife shall enjoy what I have given her during her life and after my son shall inherit my house and land”; “for the rest I leave to my wife to dispose”; “my son Simon [to be] executor … and shall entreat Deacon Gailard and Mr. Pinney to be overseers and to assist my son and wife in the ordering of my estate." (Great Migration, citing HaCR 2(probate):162)

Rockwell DNA was tested in 2002, confirming that descendents of John's (thought to be) son John, William Rockwell of Windsor, and Josiah Rockwell were very closely related. See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~rootrock/DNAproject.html for details.

Founders of Windsor, CT
Windsor was the first permanent English settlement in Connecticut. Local indians granted Plymouth settlers land at the confluence of the Farmington River and the west side of the Connecticut River, and Plymouth settlers (including Jonathan Brewster, son of William) built a trading post in 1633. But the bulk of the settlement came in 1635, when 60 or more people led by Reverend Warham arrived, having trekked overland from Dorchester, Massachusetts. Most had arrived in the New World five years earlier on the ship "Mary and John" from Plymouth, England. The settlement was first called Dorchester, and was renamed Windsor in 1637.
