The Estate of John Branker

"The will of John Branker was dated 26 May 1662 and is presented here in its entirety: 'The last will and testament of John Branker of Winsor in Conecticott is as followeth, he being sick in body, but of perfect use of his understanding, he does bestow all his whole estate unto Abigail Branker his wife, & does make her his whole executrix, witness my hand, John Branker; witnesses to this will John Warham, Richard Vore' [Hartford PD #743]. The inventory of 'John Branker who died the 27 of May last' was taken 17 June 1662 by Mathew Grant, John Moore and Benjamin Newberry, and totalled £502, of which £140 was real estate: 'All his housing, orchard, gardens, pasture within the compass of his home lot four acres,' £90; 'in the littel meadow 2 acres [and a] quarter of meadow & swamp,' £10; 'in the great meadow 5 acres,' £20; and 'on the east side of the great river 20 rodd in breadth,' £20 [Hartford PD #743, see also Manwaring 1:101 ('John Branke')]."[1]

Founders of Windsor, CT
Windsor was the first permanent English settlement in Connecticut. Local indians granted Plymouth settlers land at the confluence of the Farmington River and the west side of the Connecticut River, and Plymouth settlers (including Jonathan Brewster, son of William) built a trading post in 1633. But the bulk of the settlement came in 1635, when 60 or more people led by Reverend Warham arrived, having trekked overland from Dorchester, Massachusetts. Most had arrived in the New World five years earlier on the ship "Mary and John" from Plymouth, England. The settlement was first called Dorchester, and was renamed Windsor in 1637.
