    JOHN, Windsor, among the earliest sett. 1638 and so it is by some presumed that he went from Dorchester, but more prob. is it, that he had been short time only in Mass. and accomp. Rev. Ephraim Hewett, bring beside the six ch. ment. in his will, Sarah and Joseph, nam. by Goodwin, constable 1640, rep. 1646 and 7; and add. to ch. by w. Rose, b. prob. in Eng. at W. had Nathaniel, b. 19 July 1640; and Ann, sometimes call. Hannah, 4 Sept. 1642; and Parsons, in Geneal. Reg. V. 359, says he d. 21 Apr. 1648, and was bur. next day. But his will of the day preced. was not carr. to Court bef. June of next yr. It gives eldest s. John, £100; sec. James, £60; Samuel, Nathaniel, Rebecca, Rose, Mary, and Ann, ea. £30. His wid. was bur. 20 days aft. him. Sarah m. 24 Oct. 1644, Joseph Judson, Roxbury, freem. 5 Nov. 1633, had w. Margaret, rem. to Boston, there a supporter of Wheelwright, and disarmed 1637, soon rem. to R. I. signed their compact 1638, was an Assist. 1641 and aft. for some yrs. liv. at Portsmouth, R. I. 1655 and Wickford, 1674. Haz. II. 612. He had a d. perhaps nam. Hannah, wh. m. the sec. Samuel Wilbor.

    Porter, John, Windsor. Invt. £470-17-00. Taken 27 April, 1648, by Henry Clarke, David Wilton, William Phelps, Thomas Ford- Will dated 20 April, 1648.
    Imprimis. This is the last will and Testament made by mee, John Porter, of Wyndsor, allthough now weake and sick in body, yet in prfect memory, doe bequeath my soule to God that gave it, and my Body to be buried, and my goods as followeth:
    Ite. I give to my eldest sonne, John Porter, £100; and to my second sonne, Jeames Porter, I give £60; and to my other six children, to witt, Samuel Porter, Nathaniel, Rebeka, Rose, Mary & Anne Porter, to each £30, wch is to be raised out of my whole estate, as howseing, lands, cattell, and household goods, and is to be paid as they come to be twenty yeares of age, or sooner if my overseers sees just cause, without whose consent I would not have them marrye, wch if they doe it shall bee in the power of my ourseers to abate their portions and give it to the other that are more deserveing. And in case any of my children dye before they be married, or be twenty yeares of age, their portion shall be equally divided amongst the rest, unless the ourseers see cause to abate it uppon the eldest. In case my estate shall bee founde uppon perticular view to arise to be more in valew than these portions above given, or less than the summe, my will is that it shall bee proportionally added or abated to my childrens severall portions, except my ourseers see cause to abate my eldest, that hath the bigger portion, or likewise my second. The particular goods wherein each child shall have his portion paid out of my whole estate I leave to the discretion of my ourseers. My sonne Joseph Judgson is to take twenty shillings of Thomas Thornton, the next winter; also I give fifty shillings to the pore of Wyndsor Church. My desire is that these my beloved friends would bee the ourseers of this my last will and testament: Mr. Warham of Wyndsor, Mr. Goodwyn of Hartford, Goodman White of Hartford, Matthew Grant of Wyndsor. -- John Porter.

Founders of Windsor, CT
Windsor was the first permanent English settlement in Connecticut. Local indians granted Plymouth settlers land at the confluence of the Farmington River and the west side of the Connecticut River, and Plymouth settlers (including Jonathan Brewster, son of William) built a trading post in 1633. But the bulk of the settlement came in 1635, when 60 or more people led by Reverend Warham arrived, having trekked overland from Dorchester, Massachusetts. Most had arrived in the New World five years earlier on the ship "Mary and John" from Plymouth, England. The settlement was first called Dorchester, and was renamed Windsor in 1637.
