John Balmain was born in 1883 at Mortchup, Victoria and married Lucy Alice Auld at Essendon, Victoria in 1906. They had three children, Rendell Thomas b.1907, Lulu Alice (Bonnie?) b.1909 and John (Jack) Balmain b.1911. He is recorded in 1908-09 as living at 16 St. Leonards Rd, Essendon and from 1910-17 as living at 98 St Leonards Rd, next door to his mother Harriet. In 1920 he is recorded as living at 56 Brown's Tce, the same address he gave on Harriet's Death Certificate in 1919. From 1928-38 he lived at 32 Wiswould St, Flemington and from 1938 to at least 1946 at 44 Mills St, Hampton. John died at Brighton on 26 Apr 1973 and was cremated at the Springvale Crematorium on 30 April. Apparently he had long term connections with the racing industry and was a starter at Flemington racecourse.
