[Camden newspaper clipping] TRAIN KILLS A MAN AND TEAM / Sad Fate of Irving Durgee of North Hillsboro Road / Had Been in Camden to do Trading, and While Returning Home in the Evening Got Off the Road onto the Railroad Tracks - Mr. Martin, who was Riding with Him, Landed on the Pilot of Engine and Miraculously Escapes Death // The north-bound passenger train of the Central Road, which arrives in Camden at 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday evening, struck and killed Irving Durgee and his team at a point just above the crossing on the Oswego Road, two and a half miles from this village. Mr. Durgee, who is one of the best known farmers of the North Hillsboro Road, living just over the line in the Town of Amboy, had been in this village that afternoon on business. It is said by those who saw him that he started for home over the natural and proper route, by way of the Mexico Road, and it remains unexpained what caused him to be in the locality where he met his deplorable and shocking fate. He was accompanied by a Mr. Martin, who miraculously escaped death. Going westward over the Oswego Road the rig turned onto the railroad track at the crossing and had proceeded only a short distance, about directly back of the home of Egbert Thompson, when the evening passenger train came along. The wagon was reduced to bits, both horses were literally ground to pieces, and altho Mr. Durgee was killed outright, he was thrown clear of the roadbed. His skull was fractured and one limb broken, and there were a number of bruises on his person but his remains were not mutilated. Mr. Martin's escape seems almost impossible. He was found on the pilot of the engine. He was partially unconscious and at the time could not remember anything except his name and who to notify of the mishap. A large number from this village hastened to the scene of the accident. The remains of Mr. Durgee were taken in charge by Undertaker Castle and they were removed to his undertaking parlors in Second ST. Owing to the curve about at the place where the rig was struck, the passenger train must have got at close range before the engineer discovered their presence on the track. The wreckage was strewn for some rods. The forward trucks of the engine left the rail, but these were soon replaced and the train proceeded. Mr. Martin was taken to Williamstown and Dr. Allison of this village, the Central's physician of this section, was called to take care of him. Funeral Friday Afternoon / Yesterday afternoon the remains of Mr. Durgee were taken by Undertaker Castle to his late home, where the funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Jabez Ford of Bartlett, former resident and pastor of Hillsboro, will officiate. The burial will be made in the family lot in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Mr. Durgee was a native of Amboy and was born on the old homestead where he had spent his entire life. He was aged 37 years and 5 months. His father was the late James H. Durgee who died many years ago. His mother, Mrs. Rebecca Durgee, survives and has made her home with her son, the deceased. Mr. Durgee also leaves his wife, who was formerly Miss Flora Froebel of Amboy, whom he married twelve years ago, and six small children the oldest of whom is about 10 years; besides the following brothers and sisters: E.L. Durgee of Leominster; M.N. Durgee of Boston; Jas. H. Durgee and Wesley Durgee of Hillsboro, and Mrs. C.C. Ford of Hoffmeister NY, to all of whom much sympathy is extended.

Pulaski Democrat, 9 Oct 1912: Two men were hit by trains in Richland [!] N.Y. Irwin Durgee and Erwin Martin fell asleep with a load of feed and the horse ran down the track. Durgee was killed instantly. Martin is expected to live.

Syracuse Herald, 9 Oct 1912: IRWIN DURGEE STRUCK BY AN ENGINE NEAR WESTDALE Rome, Oct 9-- In a fatal accident on the Watertown Road last evening one man was killed, another seriously injured and a pair of horses was killed. The accident happened between Camden and Westdale, about two miles east of Westdale. Irwin Durgee, aged about 45, a farmer living near Westdale, had been to Camden after a load of feed with a neighbor, Freeman Martin, aged about 25. They were on their way home. The engine pilot struck between the horses and wagon, slaughtering the horses and killing Mr. Durgee outright. The wagon was broken into fragments and the feed scattered along the track. Martin escaped with serious injuries. Durgee is survived by his widow and eleven [!] children. The train was the passenger train due here from Utica at 6:52. Coroner G.N. Lehr of this city was notified at 7:30 and went up the road this morning to investigate the case. He gave permission to an undertaker in Camden to take charge of the body. By reason of the accident a pair of trucks was derailed and the train was stalled nearly two hours. The load of feed was secured at the grist mill near the Camden station. Instead of going to North Hillsboro where the two lived, they took the wrong road north of Camden and about three miles west of the village; in an angle of the road the horses took the railroad track, the two men evidently being asleep. The accident happened more than half a mile away from the crossing. A woman living by the side of the track saw the team a short time before the approach of the passenger train and shouted to them, but she said they paid no attention to her warning. The train was in charge of Engineer Scott and Conductor Hewett. The body of Durgee was thrown against the cab of the engine, where it was found when the train stopped. The engine was thrown from the tracks, but the train crew succeeded in getting it back on without the aid of the wrecking crew after a delay of two and a half hours. The body of Durgee was taken in charge by Undertaker Castle of Camden, under direction of Coroner Lehr, and Dr. Shafer of Camden attended to Martin.

Utica Herald Dispatch, 9 Oct 1912: CAMDEN Camden, Oct. 9-- ...Coroner Lehr of Rome came here today and made an investigation into the death of Irvin Durgee, who, as related in another column of this paper today, was killed by an R.W. & O. train west of this village last evening, his team also being killed and his companion, Freeman Martin, being injured. Mr. Durgee was a farmer who resided in North Hillsboro and was about 34 years old. He leaves his wife and six small children and a brother, James Durgee of Hillsboro.

Syracuse Herald, 13 Oct 1912: FUNERAL OF TRAIN VICTIM Camden, Oct 12-- The funeral of Irving A. Durgee, who was killed on the railroad track Tuesday evening, was held at his late home on the North Hillsboro Road yesterday afternoon. The Rev. Durgee of Leominster, M.N. Durgee of Boston, Mass., Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Ford of Hoffmeister NY, and Wesley Durgee of Hillsboro.
