1863 May 4, Cedar Villa, Hamilton Co., OH. Evan's cousin, Ada Wyckoff, wrote their cousin Tighlman Jones: "Evan Wilkinson has gone to California / I think he will have a gay time of it. I would rather enter my countries service and run the risk of my life in a noble cause. He will stand as good a chance of living there as he will croping [crossing] the plains"

1864 Jan. 21, Mason, Warren Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff wrote her cousin Tighlman Jones: "I got a letter from Jennie Wilkinson last week / she said that her brother Evan was working in a ranch at thirty dollars a month. He had better be working for uncle Sam."

1870 May 31, Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., CA. Named after his maternal grandfather, Evan's marriage record confirms his name, Evan W. Jones WILKINSON. Family tradition has "Wilkinson" as his middle name, but it is unlikely that "Wilkinson" was either man's middle name.
