Facts and Events
Emmet Brockman Bastin was the son of Major Brockman Bastin and Sarah Jane Pointer. Emmet married Harriet Alice Kincart in October of 1882, in Miami County, Kansas. They had four children: Harvey; Gladeth; Stella; and Bessie Bastin.
[edit] Oral TraditionsThe Bastin family moved from Hart County, KY to keep the boys from going to war during the Civil War. Emmet's brother Ed did a very pioneering thing - he went to Calgary, Canada, in the early 1900's. The railroad was just going through Canada. Opportunity to homestead was a great motivation. Ed thought it was really nice there and later invited Emmet to come to Canada also. So, Emmet and his family went to Canada by railroad, along with John Bastin and his family. While they were in Canada Emmet broke his hip while ice skating, and walked with a limp thereafter. Gladith hauled him home in a wagon. Harvey was around 16 at this time (ca. 1904). The family filed homestead claims, and possibly paid for some land. After about two years of this, they got tired of chopping trees, and Emmet and family moved back to Kansas on the freight train. They returned to Miami County, Kansas. Ed stayed a year longer in Canada. Later, Emmet moved to Thomas County, Kansas, and bought land there. He had heard one could get cheap land there. Emmet owned and lived on a farm near Menlo, Kansas. Gladith farmed land near Rexford for Emmet. They had first settled in the Rexford area. When Harvey got married, his house was a mile from Emmet's, and their land joined. Emmet had built a five room frame house. He was thought to be a wealthy farmer because he built a frame house instead of a sod house. Emmet's family went to Arkansas where Emmet, Bessie, and Stella (his daughters) would take hot baths for their health. This was in the winter, as recalled by Edith Bastin. When they returned from Arkansas they moved to Gem, Kansas and ran a grocery store. Emmet attended church a lot, and was quite active in church work. He was a Sunday School superintendant. Once Emmet and Alice borrowed $100 so that the three women folk could have coats to go to church in. The Bastins considered the Kincart women to be "high steppers"; they were tough and worldly. They danced! Edith Bastin thinks they were from Kansas City. Stella owned the store, so when her mother wanted candy, she paid Stella for it! Alvin Bastin recalls to Don Bastin 10/27/1997: " I only have one memory of my Grandpa Emmet Bastin. I was only three years old when he died. I remember we were at his home in Gem, Kansas. He was dressed in a dark suit, and he was roasting marshmallows for me and my brothers in the pot -bellied heating stove. He had the stove door open, and I remember the red hot coals as Grandpa held the marshmallows over the coals. The home was in a retail store that his daughter, Stella, operated. Grandpa owned a farm next to ours. I don't know who was working the farm at that time. My dad was farming it as far back as I can remember. He may have been farming it at that time."
