Sarah Jane Pointer was the daughter of Edmund Poynter and Nancy Chapman. Sarah married Major Brockman Bastin in December of 1838, in Hart County, Kentucky. They had ten children: James Anderson; Elizabeth Jane; Mary Francis; Martha Adaline; Cyrene Arabell; William Lewis; John Thomas; Edmund Cass; Emmet Brockman; and Emily Alice Bastin.

Burial

Sarah Jane Pointer is buried in the Old Hillsdale Cemetary in Miami County, Kansas. Also buried at this location are her husband Major Brockman Bastin, their son William Lewis Bastin, and their grandson Harley Bastin (son of John Thomas Bastin).
