Facts and Events
Harvey Bastin was the son of Emmet Bastin and Harriet Alice Kinkart. Harvey married Edith Hawkins in November of 1916, in Thomas County, Kansas. They had five children: Cleo; Alvin and Marion (fraternal twins); Dean; and Erma Jean Bastin.
[edit] OccupationAlvin Bastin, told to Donald Bastin 10/27/97. My dad, Harvey Elberta Bastin, was a hard working farmer and livestock producer. He would do a day's work farming with horses, and then spend several hours feeding livestock and milking cows. He did not spend money on equipment to make his work easier. He put us boys to work as soon as we were able to do anything. He had a vision of making it big in livestock, cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens, and horses for work. However, the drought and dust storms cut off the production of livestock feed, so he had to sell off the sheep and hogs at rock bottom prices because the Great Depression was on at that time. He kept the milk cows and chickens to produce cream and eggs to sell in town weekly for money to buy groceries.
