Obituary

Harvey Dean Bastin, 78, a longtime farmer in the Rexford area, died Aug. 3, 2003, at Hays Medical Center. He was born on a farm southwest of Menlo on Jan. 30, 1925, the son of Harvey E. and Edith G. (Hawkins) Bastin. He attended Menlo School through his junior year. Because of his father’s asthma and three brothers serving during World War II, he was deferred from the draft to work full-time on the farm. He received his General Education Diploma after returning to the United States from service in Korea in 1952. He was baptized and joined the Gem Baptist Church at an early age. The family moved to a farm north of Rexford in 1945. He was inducted into the Army in 1950 and served as a corporal in B Battery, 90th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division as a truck vehicle mechanic. He received the Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. In later years, he received additional medals, including the National Defense and Good Combat medals, as well as a Letter of Appreciation from the Committee for National Defense of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. He returned to the farm after his discharge. He married Glendora June Camp on June 16, 1953, in Selden. He transferred his membership to the Rexford Community Church in 1964 and had served on the church board and as Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the Rexford American Legion Post, a member of the Rexford Odd Fellows for 25 years and had served as a scoutmaster for two years. Survivors include his wife; their children, Regena and Evan Barnum, Colby; Dale and Dagmar Bastin, Belgium; Kenneth Bastin, rural Selden; Louise and Larry Lahman, Phoenix, and Louis Bastin, Fort Smith, Ark.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Cleo Bastin, Clay Center, and Alvin and Vera Bastin, Massachusetts, and a brother-inlaw, Harold Hill, Oberlin. Funeral services were Friday at the Rexford Community Church. Lane Purcell officiated, and burial was at the Rexford Cemetery with military rites by the Rexford American Legion. A memorial has been established to the Rexford Community Church. Contributions may be sent to Pauls Funeral Home, Selden, Kan., 67757.
