[edit] Related[edit] OverviewThe Frederick County hays lineage traces to Jonathan Hays (2) (1683-1735) who initially settled in Chester County PA. Here he married Elizabeth Elett (Elliot) daughter of John Ellett and Elizabeth Guy of Darby township, Delaware County PA. The story line prevalent in this family is Sometime about 1660 one Jonathan Hays, reportedly a butcher, lived in Liverpool, England, but this has never been confirmed...He had a son, Jonathan II, born January 16, 1685, who came to Philadelphia as a Captain on a British ship. Soon after his arrival, he sold his Captaincy and resolved to become a farmer. Thereafter he married a Quaker girl by the name of Elizabeth Elliott, who was born on March 17, 1678. … [He] was given a farm near Philadelphia by his father-in-law. Sometime after 1734 Jonathan and Elizabeth are supposed to have relocated to New Castle, Delaware. Direct evidence for this is lacking. At least one of their children, Jonathan (10), subsequently relocated to Frederick County Maryland, which area was being initially settled in the 1730's and 1740's. It is unclear whether any of the other children of Jonathan (2) came to the area. Jonathan (10) died in 1794. Some of his children remained in the area [edit] Lineage[edit] Issues1. Original source documentation for this line is weak. 2. The earliest documentation that can be firmly attached to the Frederick County line comes in the form of a 1760 petition signed by Jonathan Hayes and Charles Hayes in Frederick County. Jonathan is presumed to be Jonathan (10), but we do not know who Charles is. Presumably he's a kinsman, but the relationship is unknown. 3. We lack any original source documentation for the family presence in New Castle DE. 4. Jonathan is said to have married Elizabeth Ellet sometime before 1734. A John Ellet identifies a daughter Elizabeth Hayes in his 1734 will. This Jonathan is presumably Jonathan (10), but we have no direct evidence (beyond) family stories recored in the 1880's, to connect Jonathan of Frederick County MD with Jonathan the supposed soninlaw of John Ellet. Objectively speaking, we have little reason to believe that the Frederick County line of Hays came to that area from either New Castle Delaware, or from Old Chester, PA. That doesn't mean that these migration routes are incorrect, only that they are not supported (so far in this study) by original source documentation.
