Welcome

Welcome to WeRelate, your virtual genealogical community. We're glad you have joined us. At WeRelate you can easily create ancestor webpages, connect with cousins and other genealogists, and find new information.

Create Webpages

The first thing to do is launch Family Tree Explorer, then select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and give your family tree a name. You can either upload your GEDCOM or create person and family pages one at a time. To upload your GEDCOM, select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and then click on Import and choose the GEDCOM file to import. The system will create a editable web page for each person and family in your GEDCOM. To create a page manually, select Add in the Family Tree Explorer menu and click on Add new person; enter the given (first name) and surname (last name), select Add, then fill in the blanks and save.

The Family Tree Explorer is a Flash application and will need to use some space in your computer to cache the files. That's computer talk for "If you store some ancestor page information on your computer, you will be able to view more pages faster. Otherwise, the system has to fetch each page every time you edit or look at it. This caching is not permanent and only lasts as long as you are at WeRelate each time.

Connect with other genealogists

You should always sign in when you are editing or adding pages. Use the signature button to sign your work (the swiggle, second from the right, above the edit box). That way others with similar interests can find you. If you click on the blue user name on any page, you will go to that person's home page. You can leave a message on his/her Discussion page. The Discussion page button is in the light green second level menu bar above.

Gedcom glitch [18 February 2008]

Hi,

I noticed that you had tried to upload a gedcom on January 26th that didn't get processed due to a bug that we had where gedcom's greater than 5MB in size were ignored. I just wanted to let you know that the bug has been fixed.--Dallan 11:05, 18 February 2008 (EST)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [11 April 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded WERELATE.GED, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Non-standard place [29 April 2011]

Hello, I am one of the volunteer admins here on WeRelate. I noticed that you created a place page for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. WeRelate's policy is to allow place pages for towns, counties, states, etc and cemeteries (not churches, hospitals or other physical locations). I will edit your pages and move the references to this place to the description field. Let me know if you have any questions, --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:43, 15 April 2011 (EDT)

I also edited the page that referenced Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and removed that place page as well. --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:50, 17 April 2011 (EDT)

So a military base where hundreds of people live and work is not allowed but Place:Provo Temple, Provo, Utah, Utah, United States is OK? I doubt that anyone actually lives there.

Or an Army base such as Place:Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth, Kansas, United States is allowed but a Marine Corps base is not?

--Rick 02:31, 29 April 2011 (EDT)

Under the current rules Rick, no, I don't feel that Provo Temple should be allowed as a place page. I don't monitor all of the place page additions, and there are many examples of places that were imported incorrectly (such as the shopping mall I deleted the other week, and the trailer parks another admin deleted...). My suggestion is that if you believe the guidelines as stated on Portal:Place or Help:Place pages are incorrect, that you bring up that issue on the Watercooler. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:12, 29 April 2011 (EDT)

Gedcom cleanup [17 April 2011]

Hello, You're doing a good job in getting your gedcoms ready for import. Here's a few more tips which will save a lot of admin time in processing your files. There are things that we do in our personal databases that are not appropriate for public web pages. We do not create empty web pages for unnamed babies and spouses. These should be excluded by checking the box when you are reviewing the person page. You can jump over to the family page and leave a note that they existed to fill holes in the child ladder. If you excluded a spouse, check that the family did not get excluded (i.e. uncheck the box on the family page.) We do not create pages for living people. And we do not allow gedcom for pages of people born before about 1750. These should be entered by hand after checking for already existing pages. Early people have a stricter standard for documentation. Heresay is discouraged as it creates many errors that must be fixed. You have many sources that show people's email addresses. Email addresses should not be posted on web pages without the person's express permission. You should address this issue now by reviewing your MySource pages (see your Watch list and filter for the MySource name space). If you have more to upload, I recommend that you try smaller files. Large ones are more difficult to clean up properly. You can leave a note here if you have questions. I'll be watching for a while. Or you can always post a question by selecting Support from the Help menu at the top of every page. Enjoy! --Judy (jlanoux) 14:02, 17 April 2011 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)

Thanks for your comments. Considering the number of issues should I delete the GEDCOMs and redo them?

Also I'm puzzled. I changed the title of all of my census sources to be exactly the same as yours and they are all still unique.--Rick 17:14, 17 April 2011 (EDT)

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded WERELATE9.GED, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate.

Place page titles [23 April 2011]

I've noticed that you are creating a number of new place pages (most likely during gedcom upload). Please review and follow our naming conventions for place pages. Titles such as Township of Saline, Sevier, Arkansas, United States are not standard WR convention. Since there is only one Saline in Sevier county, this would be titled Saline, Sevier, Arkansas, United States. The type for this place would be set to Township. If a city and a township share a name in the same county, you can disambiguate it by appending (township) after the township's name, like Place:Greensboro (township), Henry, Indiana, United States. I will edit the places that you have created to date. Please keep these conventions in mind when creating future pages. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 09:20, 23 April 2011 (EDT)

Cemetery pages [27 April 2011]

Hi, Okrick! I've noticed that you've been adding quite a few cemetery pages lately. Thank you! I do have one request. When you add a cemetery page, please add the category for at least the location. (For example: [[Category:Cemeteries of Monroe, Indiana, United States|Hughes]]. This information can be added in the large text box when you add or edit a page. Having the category link will allow the page to show up on the category pages, such as this one. The cemetery page is also a great place to include a link to the cemetery's page on FindAGrave.com or any other resource for that cemetery. If you have any questions, just let me know. Thanks! --Amy (Ajcrow) 07:25, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Amy,

OK, I'll try to remember. By the way what's the template for findagrave links?--Rick 12:15, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

There are a couple of different ways to do it. Some people like to include both the link to the FaG website and to the FaG Source page here on WeRelate. Several other of us prefer just to have the link to the FaG website. I generally add the header ==Resources==, followed by a bulleted item, such as:
*[http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=1987198&CScn=mount+ebal&CScntry=4&CSst=17&CScnty=844& FindAGrave.com: Mount Ebal Cemetery]. The first part is the URL, then everything after the first space is what is actually shown on the page.
If you're ever curious about how something is formatted, click "Edit" on the page and take a look at the various sections. You don't have to change anything; you can click "Cancel" at the bottom of the page when you're done. -- Amy 12:47, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Possible duplicates list [27 April 2011]

Hi Okrick, there seems to be something strange going on with your possible duplicates list. I'm curious, were you previously watching (before this morning) pages associated with Family:Jan Bergsma and Antje Bovinga (1)? I'm wondering if some of these duplicates are showing up on your list incorrectly. Also, you are adding no-merge templates to pages that may actually need to be merged and sorted out. It would be preferable if these remained on the duplicates list so they can be fixed in the future. Adding the no-merge to them tells the system they are not the same person, when in fact they may be.

If you are finding that pages you were never watching are showing up in your list, please let me know so that I can address the problem with Dallan. Thank you! --Jennifer (JBS66) 18:12, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Dutch duplicates - please avoid merging [27 April 2011]

Hello again, I see that you are also merging Dutch families that are not on your duplicates list. I appreciate your assistance in merging duplicates here on WeRelate, but I need to ask that you avoid merging the Dutch families. They are part of a larger project that I am working on and I have a bit of a system to merging these. Thank you very much for you understanding. --Jennifer (JBS66) 18:19, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Jennifer,

I'll stop merging the Dutch pages. I was going through your duplicate list. I'll also stop using the not a duplicate button unless they are clearly not duplicates, e.g. born over 100 years apart.--Rick 18:51, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Thank you :-) I noticed that you are now watching all of the pages you are merging, which you probably don't want to do. Under Settings>Edit there is a checkbox for add pages I edit to my watchlist. If you uncheck this, pages that you simply edit or merge will stop being added to your Watchlist. Also, when the banner at the top of your page indicates that you have a message, you may want to take a moment to check it. I had to find a creative way to slow you down :-)) --Jennifer (JBS66) 18:57, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Paul Abel [28 April 2011]

Thank you for adding a do not merge to Family:Paul Abel and Leany Unknown (1) I didn't know we could do that and yes, they should't be merged just because both Pauls are married to someone named Leany Unknown. I should expand the notes on these people - I'll get to that.--cthrnvl 20:19, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Black Lick Township [2 May 2011]

Hi, Okrick. I think we might have been editing the same page at the same time, but in case we weren't, I just wanted to point out that Place pages for townships do not typically include the word "Township." As it says on the page when you add a Place page: "Omit "type" words like County or District from the name. Use type words in parentheses only if needed to distinguish the place from an existing place with the same name; e.g., Thornton (township), Cook, Illinois, United States as distinguished from the village Thornton, Cook, Illinois, United States."

I added an example on the hep page for Place pages. So if there is not already a place with that township's name, the Place page would be titled township, county, state, United States. (For example, Prairie, Henry, Indiana, United States.

If there is a town/village with the township's name, such as Henry County, Indiana having both a town and a township named Greensboro, the township's page gets named Greensboro (township), Henry, Indiana, United States. Please let me know if you have any questions. -- Amy (Ajcrow) 13:00, 2 May 2011 (EDT)

OK, I thought that Synods were religious designations not civil or population centers. Anyway I'll leave them alone.

One question, I believe Scotland is in the United Kingdom? I believe that listing Scotland as an independent country would only be appropriate for events prior to 1707 when it merged with England.--Rick 16:11, 2 May 2011 (EDT)

For Scotland, Wales, etc the decision was made to leave the level of United Kingdom off of place page titles. I was not here at the time of those discussions, but you can find the history behind the decision by searching for United Kingdom in user, help, or WeRelate namespace conversations. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:16, 3 May 2011 (EDT)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [17 May 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded THOMPSON FAMILY CEMETERY.GED, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Find a Grave images [22 June 2011]

I noticed that you have added photos from Find A Grave. Photos from Find A Grave are not public domain. Unless there is clear indication on the image page that you either took the photograph or have permission from the copyright owner to use it on WeRelate (including agreeing to WeRelate's licensing), it will need to be deleted. Please see our policy here.

The best way to include those types of images is to link to the memorial page. For example, on the page for Harris Thompson, you could enter this in the text area: Photo of Harris' gravestone on [http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=25200686 FindAGrave.com]. The link would look like this:

Images can be deleted by clicking on More>delete from the image page. Please let me know if you have any questions. --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:57, 22 June 2011 (EDT)
