Next step: Review your GEDCOM [28 February 2012]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded 2012 02 28 KS Johanna Gertenbach.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

MySources vs. Sources [25 March 2012]

Hello Edwin, I noticed that you are creating MySource pages for Burgerlijke Stand sources. You can do this, but I wanted to show you another option as well. Examples can be found on this page: Person:Minne Steginga (1). Both the DTB and Burgerlijke Stand link to WR Sources (instead of MySources). There are a few advantages to this. First, a Source page like Source:Workum, Friesland, Netherlands. Burgerlijke Stand can contain information about how to access that source, usage tips, etc. Also, you can see a list of all pages that reference that source by clicking on 'What links here'. Using Sources may also save you some time and effort.

MySources are good for items that are specific to one person or family. Sources are good when they apply to many people, like the Burgerlijke Stand, Bevolkingsregister, etc. If you have any questions about this, just let me know. --Jennifer (JBS66) 16:36, 24 March 2012 (EDT)

Hi Jennifer, Thank you for noticing my struggle with the sourcing. And thank you for the examples. It makes complete sense now: how the (my)source pages and the information concerning sources on the person pages complement each other. I will try to follow your example. Edwin--Bronquest 10:46, 25 March 2012 (EDT)

I think what can make the process a bit confusing is Sources that are imported via Gedcom are automatically created as MySources. Sometimes, users will go through their pages later and change MySources into Source citations. This is certainly optional. I do think as you are hand entering data, using Sources will be easier for you. If you have a Source that fits neither the MySource or Source mold, you can also just enter the text in the Source field, but choose "citation only" from the drop-down box.
I will let you know also that we are in the process of renaming the Dutch source citations. You can find a bit more information about that project here: Reorganisatie Nederlandse bronnen. Sometimes you will find the Burgerlijke Stand sources under "Burgerlijke Stand" and other times you'll find them under "Registers Van de Burgerlijke Stand". --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:01, 25 March 2012 (EDT)

Person/Family pages with Unknown in the title [31 March 2012]

Hi Edwin, I noticed that you are adding patronymic or surnames to pages where the name was previously Unknown. One example is Person:Leentgen Unknown (1). You added the patronymic name Gerritsdr to the page. When the primary name on a page changes significantly from the page title, you will need to Rename the Person and Family pages. You'll notice at the top of Leentgen's page it says Person:Leentgen Unknown (1). You will need to click on the Rename link on that page and change Leentgen Unknown to Leentgen Gerritsdr. Also, you would need to go to the Family:Govert Unknown and Leentgen Unknown (1) page and Rename that to Govert Hendriksz and Leentgen Gerritsdr.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when renaming pages. 1. You do not need to add the (1) number when you Rename a page, the software will assign a number for you. 2. Include only First and Last or First and Patronymic names in the title. For example, you would not want to rename a page to Gerrit Johannes Swart but just Gerrit Swart. If you have any questions, just let me know. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:23, 31 March 2012 (EDT)

Nagtegael and Speckingh families [28 apr 2013]

Hello Bronquest, Your records have given me the earliest lead yet on my ancestry; Philips Pietersz. Nagtegael and his wife Hester Speckingh are my direct ancestors, my Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents, to be exact. They are on my father's side, via the Kranenberg and Kriek families. On my mother's side I have traced back only 7 generations, and many of the early ancestors on that side are of French extraction - Names such as Brochard, Tiermet and Scharwoude appear. Do you have any information on the Nagtegael and Speckingh families earlier than the ones shown above?

Thank you for any help you can provide

Rudy Vandenbroek (or Ruud v.d.Broek op z'n Hollands!)--Rudyvdbroek 04:51, 25 April 2013 (EDT)

hello Ruud,

I've looked into th source I used for Nagtegael and Speckingh. I think I have foud generations earlier. I will put them on line one of these days. I have almost all of my results on weRelate. I like the idea behind it and I think it is scientifically healthy to put your results open to debate. For me this couple are direct ancestors too. On my mothers side through Kranenberg and Coppij. It's funny you say you have French ancestry on your mothers side. For me, the ancestry in Leiden (including some Dutch, like Nagtegael and Speckingh) are most of French or French Belgian origin. It also means we both share direct ancestry with the Zangeres zonder Naam :-). I let you know when I have added the extra persons and families.

kind regards, Edwin

I've added some parents and grandparents of this couple. Feel free to watch them.

Edwin

Renaming pages [24 May 2013]

I noticed that you have renamed some pages to include first, patronymic, and last names. The standard on WeRelate is to title pages only with first and last names (or first and patronymic if no surname was used). For example, with Person:Jacob Gerrits Klein (1), instead of renaming Jacob Gerrits to Jacob Gerrits Klein, it should be renamed to Jacob Klein. This standard applies to both Person and Family pages. Let me know if you have any questions. --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:05, 24 May 2013 (EDT)

Bron http://geneagraphie.com/ [11 December 2013]

Hartelijke groet

New suggestion page [1 January 2015]

Hi. I happened to notice that you added an entry to the WeRelate:Suggestions page. It would be helpful if you added a page with a description of your suggestion at this place: WeRelate:Suggestions/Example person pages (just click to start creating it). Not everyone would be able to guess what exactly is wanted that might come under the short title "Example person pages" and so some further details on that new page would help. (The page also serves as a place to discuss variations, and serves as a way of tallying community interest in the particular suggestion.) Thanks. --robert.shaw 21:08, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Cleaned up: I've removed the "Example person pages" line as you asked on my talk page. Happy 2015! --robert.shaw 17:45, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Herman Johan Offerhaus - Elisabeth Jacoba Zugger [6 September 2015]

Hallo,

Scheiding volgens uw informatie in 1923.

In case you're wondering.... [18 November 2015]

I'm glad to see someone working with some of the older European stuff that I spent so much time on a few years ago. Particularly someone native to the relevant locale.

I don't really have genealogy interests outside of my family in North America, but I didn't want WR's database to remain an embarrassment of dumped GEDCOMs. I therefore did as much de-duplication as I could while bringing in some of the more obvious publicly available content (generally English Wikipedia).

I particularly want you to know, in spite of the range of materials I wound up touching, I am only a speaker of English. I did establish page and primary names when the originals were (in my view anyway) useless. Bizarre names seem to have often been created as a result of GEDCOM dump/load cycles with different software. I'm quite sure that anyone, with appropriate local knowledge, will be able to do a better job with names than I did.

I hope you're finding the content to at least be useful as a starting point. Good Luck!

Another in case you're wondering... [23 November 2015]

I noticed that I had never added the "House of Holland" to the super category for houses of nobility, so I just did that. It seems that people interested in this sort of stuff tend to focus on particular "houses" of nobles. House names are sometimes equivalent or obvious permutations of the accepted surname - but not always. I wanted to add that information so that it would help organize nobles - which often aren't easy to organize by surname.

You'll see that I've added template references like {{NobleHouse|Holland}} to the birth event for children "born" into a particular house of nobility. I depart from that practice for someone who is considered to be a "founder" of a house - and put the template on a fact line associated with the date of the originating event (perhaps a military conquest, a grant from royalty or whatever).

Perhaps it's something that you'll find useful...

A concern for your renaming efforts... [14 December 2015]

FWIW, I utterly defer to your sense of the proper names for the folks you're working on. I'm very happy with what I've seen you do.

I would like to think the WeRelate database - or something extracted from it - will persist in some distant future as a generally accepted open/common genealogy database. But it may not. Perhaps more likely - it may persist as extracted GEDCOM files.

That being possible - I think it would be wise to extract a small GEDCOM covering areas where you have worked. See if the names you're changing are figuring as the primary/preferred name for people. I'm concerned that some of your changes are not being done in a way that is apt to persist over a GEDCOM extract and reload to some other system. I think such a loss would be extremely unfortunate.

Best Regards...

Wikidata Item? [13 January 2016]

Since you're touching on a lot of articles backed by various language versions of Wikipedia, I wanted to ask you about this...

In spite of all the WP extracts I've added - I've never claimed that WP was a source (or at least - not a great one... - still - it's way better than nothing). My claim had always been that the reference to Wikipedia served more as an objective identifier of who the page is associated with.

Since Wikidata provides a language neutral way to establish an individual identity - maybe it's actually a better way to nail down who a notable individual really is?

I've put an example on this page.

Considering that you're working with different languages - I was thinking that you probably run into individuals who have a Wikidata item identifier - but who don't have an English language wikipedia page. Also, since the Wikidata IDs serve as the basis for equating different language pages of Wikipedia - it's certainly apt to stick around.

Would appreciate your thoughts...

Antonia de Hainaut and Rosamunde van Vlaanderen [26 March 2016]

In my research of family history, I have come across several web pages that repeat information and hint at your WeRelate information as the source of certain family relationships.

1): Antonia de Hainaut (1134-1168) as daughter of Baudouin IV "le Batisseur" de Hainaut (1115-1171) and Alix de Namur (1115-1169)

and 2): Antonia's mother-in-law: Rosamunde van Vlaanderen (1067-1114) as daughter of Robrecht I "de Fries" van Vlaanderen (1030-1093) and Geertruida Billung van Saksen (1028-1113)

However on most web pages with well documented sources, Antonia is not listed among the known children of Baudouin IV and Alix, and Rosamunde is not listed among the known children of Robrecht I and Geertruida.

I am very interested in finding the first order sources that would help to validate these claims.--John Terpstra 13:43, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Maria Hoornaert [28 December 2016]

I'm not sure Maria Hoornaert's mother was Clara de Riemer. Clara was a second wife. Charles Hoornaert married Mayken Meeuwels in Haarlem on 17 August 1608. I think Maria was their third child, born around 1613, however I have not found her baptism. Her two older siblings (half siblings?) were Johannes, baptized 16 Feb 1610 in Haarlem and Jacomina, baptized 27 December 1611 in Haarlem. Since I haven't found Maria's baptism, I can't rule out your belief that her mother was Clara de Riemer. Clearly Janneken is the child of Charles and Clara.--AvitaFide 05:20, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Charles Hoornaert [28 December 2016]

I don't know your level of interest and I'm new to this website, but Charles was also baptized in Haarlem, 10 December 1588, the son of Jan Hoornaert from Ardooie and his wife Catharine van Coilge. Five other children were baptized in Haarlem, I haven't seen any indication of children born prior to their coming to Haarlem, but it's a possibility. Charles' siblings were Marcus (17.2.1591), Saloman (12.9.1593), Johannes (11.6.1596), Magdalena (25.11.1601) and Gabriel (3.6.1607). Magdalena married first Jan van Oost in Harderwijk 10 May 1629 but more interestingly, married second Gerrit de Riemer 2 October 1631 in Deventer. Banns for this second marriage were read in both Deventer and Amsterdam. Might Gerrit be somehow related to Clara?--AvitaFide 16:15, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Mayken Meeuwels was baptized in Haarlem, 20 March 1589, the daughter of Bertram Meeuwels (linenweaver from Menen) and his wife (married in Haarlem) Janneken Cornelis Vrijbos.--AvitaFide 16:24, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Joannes Hoornaert [3 January 2017]

Edwin,

This family's last name is Hoornaert. The name has its origin in Belgium or northern France and it has often been butchered in records in Germany and in the Netherlands. In Johannes's baptismal record, the person entering the baptism into the record book took a stab at spelling it but failed to get it right. Here in the U.S. we have to cope with census takers who are notoriously bad spellers. I always note the misspelled name in my records so that people can follow my research and duplicate an electronic search using the misspelled name and therefore access the record. In the case of Joannes (Johannes) Hoornaert, I agree with your alternative name entry, however when I go to add the man's wife and children the name is still misspelled at the basic person level. I have tried to alter it but have been unsuccessful. I've only used this site for a few days. Is there a way to correct the spelling of the name? Thanks!--AvitaFide 00:36, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Interestingly, a son-in-law of Joannes Hoornaert was Willem Sluyter. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_Sluyter--AvitaFide 05:12, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Another son-in-law was Samuel Pitiscus. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pitiscus--AvitaFide 05:26, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Edwin,

Thanks for you help with Johannes Hoornaert! You make a good point about when surnames achieved any real standardization in spelling. However even standardized spelling doesn't stop record keepers from both minor and major spelling mistakes and variations. Many of my ancestors names were standardized in Germany but when they met up with non-German speaking record keepers in the U.S., misspellings abounded. Charles seemed to have been fairly consistent with spelling the name Hoornaert. It appears that way in his signature on his contract with the city of Deventer, on the title page of his book and even in Revius. His son signed his name in the Deventer church books at his marriage Joannes Hoornaert. That however is not always the way record keepers have spelled it, in fact in that marriage record, the record keeper spelled it Johannes Hoornart. I'll review the tutorial for this site, that will probably help me quite a bit, I was probably a bit over eager to get started after I saw there was someone else actually interested in these people. Very nice to meet you! Rob--AvitaFide 19:29, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Beulake [7 jan 2017]

Mail even naar ad@pijlman.net

Goede morgen

Verifying anomalies [24 October 2022]

Hi. Before marking an anomaly as verified, you must ensure that the appropriate sources are on the page(s) to prove the dates and relationships. If you don't have these sources, please just mark the page as deferred. It can be left deferred if you can't find sources - maybe someone will find a source in the future, or maybe the issue will never be resolved, but marking it as verified is misleading.

I removed two templates this morning. In one case, the data was actually incorrect, as the wrong mother was identified. In the other case, there is no documentation (in WeRelate) to support the relationship or the dates.
