This Ordnance Survey map of 1944 from A Vision of Britain through Time locates the rural districts in existence in Wiltshire between 1934 and 1974.

Calne and Chippenham Rural District was a merger of the earlier rural districts of Calne Rural District and Chippenham Rural District. The rural district was in the central western part of Wiltshire with Gloucestershire and Somerset across the county borders to the west. It surrounded the urban districts of Calne and Chippenham. To the north were the rural districts of Malmesbury and Cricklade and Wootton Bassett; to the east that of Marlborough; to the south those of Devizes and Bradford and Melksham. Calne and Chippenham Rural District existed from 1934 until 1974 when it became part of the West Wiltshire District.
