The baptisms of all the elder siblings of William have been found either in Colvend and Southwick parish or in Kirkpatrick-Durham parish in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. According to the 1851-2 census of Canada, William was born in Scotland. Hearsay suggests that the family emigrated to Canada in 1815, a year in which more than one emigration scheme was finding people to settle in Lanark County. Either the Wilson family had moved away from Kirkpatrick-Durham by 1812 or they failed to have William baptized.
The death registration for William Wilson was not found. Vital statistics were not collected in Ontario until 1869, and the organization was slow to be put into operation in the more rural parts of the province. His birth and death years are to be found on the inscription on Stone 149 at Scotch Line Cemetery.
