John Wilson emigrated to Lanark County with his parents and siblings around 1815. Data provided on Ancestry family trees and on the family gravestone at Scotch Line Cemetery indicates that his father died in 1827 and his mother in 1850.

John and his brother George farmed a lot in North Burgess Township, almost immediately south of the land farmed by their brothers in Bathurst Township. It would appear that John and George married two sisters, Mary Taylor Forgie and Ann Forgie, respectively. Ann Forgie died before the 1851-2 census, so little information about her is known. The two couples used many of the same names for their children and it can be difficult to identify the parentage of some of them in later years.

In 1851-2 census John does not show up in the agricultural census for North Burgess, but 160 acres of Lot 14 on Concession 3 in Bathurst Township is in his name. All the land in North Burgess may have been in George's name.

The Digital Atlas of Ontario, illustrating the ownership of land circa 1870, shows George's son, Samuel Wilson (age 12 in the 1851 census) on a parcel of land in North Burgess immediately south of that owned by a number of Wilsons in Bathurst Township.
