Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Image:ScottWmBeverleySE125acres.JPG

William Scott's land (Beverley Manor SE, 125 acres, 1754) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009.

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 92.--Ditto. Same (From James Patton) to William Scot, 100 A. by patent, 3d November, 1750. Middle Lick Run of Catawba. (Note: this may be another William Scott).
  • Page 238.--15th May, 1754. Beveriey to Wm. Scott, 125 acres in Beverley Manor. Cor. Ro. Coningham, John Black's line.

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 287.--17th January, 1786. William Scott and Agness to William Scott, of Lincoln County. (The location or size of this tract was not listed, but in the will of James Ewing, he mentions "to son, James, lands conveyed by William Scott adjoining Philip Osinger and James Hathorn", who were living in Beverley Manor, the likely location of this land. The William Scott "of Lincoln County" is most likely William Scott, Jr., who was listed in the will of William Scott, Sr.).

Will of William Scott

  • Page 146.--4th February, 1791. William Scott's will--Aged about 70 years; to son, Robert, to minten Saley as long as she lives; to doughter, Saley, the wan halif of my house hold furniture; to sons, William, James, John, to daughter, Fany; to son, Robert, whole of estate of sister Sarah Hutchingson. Executor, Walter Davis. Teste: William Davis, David Caldwell, Jno. Davis. Proved, 20th January, 1795, by William and John Davis. (Note: this establishes William Scott's birthdate as about 1721, since he stated that his age was "about 70 years" at the writing of his will in 1791).

Processioning List of 1755

"Processioning" was the process or periodically reviewing and agreeing upon property lines between settlers. Processioning Lists can be useful in determining the area of a settler and the neighboring settlers at a specific time period:
