Facts and Events
~ William was the twin son of Richard Pascoe and Hannah Rutter. His father was born in Sithney Parish, Cornwall, in 1763, a few years before the barque Endeavour was purchased for HM Navy, for Lieutenant James Cook to make his famous voyage 1768-1770, to the South Pacific, recording the transit of Venus, and mapping the coasts of New Zealand and Eastern Australia. ~ William and twin brother James baptism was recorded for 1 Jan 1787, in the Helston Parish Baptism Register. The date of their birth in 1786 was taken from the a notebook, likely to have been owned by William Pascoe's half-sister Elizabeth Trevithick (nee Pascoe). It contained the birth dates of all her siblings and half siblings, and was transcribed in the 1930's in Australia, by a family researcher who was a grandchild of Elizabeth's. In the 1930's there was a worldwide search by lawyers for Pascoe descendants of a very substantial inheritance held in Chancery in England. Many Pascoe families were contacted to provide proof of their family history and eligibility for the fortune, and this sparked newspaper reports and family history research among many Pascoe families in Australia and New Zealand. ~ William's professions: Carpenter & the later publican. Trained by his father Richard Pascoe of Helston, a carpenter and joiner, in a traditional 4-5 year indentured apprenticeship. ~ Married Jane Trenwith on 15 Aug 1814, Madron, Cornwall. At the time of marriage the residences given for William and Jane were Penzance. Witnesses were William Trembath and Tobias Read, and may have been professional witnesses, as they married out of their home parishes. Children's baptisms consistently give William's occupation as a carpenter/joiner. ~ He was recorded in the 1841 Census, (living close to his fathers residence) address: Lower Road, Helston; William Pascoe 50, Joiner, born Cornwall; Jane 45, b. Cornwall; William 20, tailor; Jane 16; Mary 14; James 11; Edward 9; Juliana 13; and Elizabeth 7. Note: unable to find a baptism for their first son William. Likely he was born before they married. Whether he was Jane's son or not, he was raised by them, and referred to Jane as his mother on all official documents. ~ William Pascoe later leased the Golden Lion Inn, in Penzance after it was advertised in the Cornwall Royal Gazette on Friday 3 Sept 1841. ~ West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser, 29 March 1844, Friday Deaths. At Penzance, on Friday last, Mr. Wm. Pascoe, of the Golden Lion Inn, aged 57 years. ~ Cornish Telegraph, March 1844. DEATHS. 22 inst, in this town, Mr William Pascoe, of the Golden Lion Inn, aged 57 years. ~ His burial record on 27 Mar 1844, is under the Parish of Helston with the residence given as Penzance. ~ His will left the Golden Lion to his wife Jane, and executors were his son William Pascoe and brother, 'Richard of Ludgvan, miller'. (brother Richard Pascoe married Grace Gillis, & settled in Ludgvan, Cornwall). References
