Moore, William - born 1754 in Botetourt [then Augusta*] County, Virginia; entered service 1780 in Randolph County, North Carolina, where resided, in North Carolina Regiment; resided after Revolutionary War in Moore County, North Carolina, then in 1808 to Indiana Territory; granted Pension 1832 in Orange County, Indiana; died 4/15/1833; query letter in file states soldier was born 12/16/1754 & died 4/15/1832**, per his tombstone in old cemetery a few miles east of Paoli, Indiana, other members of family buried there, also his wife Rachel was born 1762 & died 5/19/1829, children included Henry Reed & Polly Ann; query letter in file says soldier served in 3rd North Carolina Regiment. F-S17592, R1760.
  • - Note: Botetourt County was founded in 1769 from part of Augusta County, Virginia.
      • - William's date of death was in 1833 and not in 1832, and this is confirmed by his Revolutionary War Pension statement in Orange County, Indiana Court on 13 November 1832.

    Orange County State of Indiana: Sct.
    On this 13th day of November 1832 personally came and appeared in open Court before
    Thomas Vandeveer Judge of the probate Court for the County aforesaid now sitting William
    Moore a resident in the County of Orange in the State aforesaid aged 78 Years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832 that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated that is to say on the 25th of December in the year 1780 he entered the service of the United States as a militia man under the command of one Capt. Charles Gholson of the Militia in the County of Randolph in the State of North Carolina and attached to a Regiment under the command of one Col. John Litrell [sic, Lt. Col. John Luttrell], that he entered the service of the United States under the said Capt. Charles Gholson as aforesaid in the said County of Randolph in the said State of North Carolina marched from thence from place to place as occasion required in the state aforesaid watching the movements of the Tories and British (the Tories being very troublesome) that he served the term of 3 months and was discharged that he was in no general engagement during the term of service.
    That he again entered the service of the United States as a militia man some time in the fall of 1781 and previous to the capture of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown in Virginia under the Command of the aforesaid Capt. Charles Gholson who commanded a company of militia taken
    out of the Counties of Randolph, Chatham and Moore in the State of North Carolina that he left the service of the United States sometime in the early part of the winter in the year 1781 that he was employed in no general engagement during his services either under the first and last Tours he having served the Time of 3 months each that he was generally engaged at reconnoitering and watching the movements of the enemy and keeping in check the Tories who were extremely
    troublesome throughout the greater part of the State of North Carolina -- That he was born in the County of Botetourt in the State of Virginia in the year 1754 according to the record of a family Bible which belonged to his father in which record is yet fresh in his recollection that he resided in the said County of Randolph in the said State of North Carolina when he entered the service of the United States in the said years of 1780 and 1781 as aforesaid -- he was not acquainted with any of the regular officers of the United States then in service. And that he resided in the County of Moore shortly after having served his last tour of 3 months in 1781 where he resided somewhere about 27 years that he removed to the Territory of Indiana in the year 1808 from the said County of Moore in the State of North Carolina that he now resides in the County of Orange in the State of Indiana that he received his discharge for his service in 1780 and also his discharge for his said service in 1781 that said discharges as he is inclined to believe are now on file in the office of the war department at the City of Washington they having been sent there some time previous to the passage of the Act of Congress of June 7th 1832, that the only documentary evidence in his behalf to him now known is now in the state aforesaid, that he
    knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State.

    This day personally came Henry Marley1 before me Stephen Hoggatt a Justice of the
    peace for said County and after being duly sworn deposeth and saith as follows that he knew of Mr. William Moore serving a tour in the land service of the United States in the revolutionary war under the command of Col. Luttrell further the Deponent Saith not Sworn to and Subscribed this day first mentioned.
