William MASTERTON was christened 5jan1816 in Larbert (family letters) and died 3jul1895 (family letters). William married 26jul1859 Janet LUMSDEN (23oct1823-13sep1912) in Redgorton, Perthshire. William became Rev. William Masterton and was buried in Morningside graveyard, Edinburgh. Scottish Archives have the will of Rev. William Masterton, sometime F.C. Minister, Inverkeillor, Forfarshire, afterwards residing at Dannebrog, 45 Cluny Gardens, Edinburgh, K.D., d. 03/07/1895 at Edinburgh, testate. William Masterton (b. 1816 Larbert, see Annals of Free Church) studied 1843-7 at Edinburgh University (archives.lib.ed.ac.uk). William Masterton, Larbert, was awarded a prize for translation of English into Latin at Edinburgh University (Caledonian Mercury 8may1841). In 1851 Rev. William lived at Free Church Manse, Anniston Rd., Inverkeilor, Angus, as minister. In 1881 William Masterton (Minister of Inverkeillor Free Church, b. 1816 Larbert), wife Janet (b. 1827 Dysart), son James (bank clerk, b. 1864 Inverkeillor) and 1 servant lived at F. C. Manse, Inverkeillor, Forfarshire (census). William studied at University and New College, Edinburgh, (in 1841 he was a student) and was ordained at Inverkeillor in 1848. For several years he was clerk of the Presbytery of Arbroath. In 1872 he received from the King of Denmark the order of the Dannebrog (Knight of Denmark) in recognition of the services he rendered to young Danes who were engaged in the study of agriculture in Forfarshire. He became a senior minister in 1880 and was knighted. From “Annals of the Free Church of Scotland 1843-1900” (ed. William Ewing, 1914): William Masterton was born 1816 at Larbert, studied at the University and New College, Edinburgh, and was ordained at Inverkeilor 1848. He married 1859 Janet Lumsden. He was clerk of the Presbytery of Arbroath. (1864 Inverkeilor, bank clerk) and 1 servant were at Cluny Dannebeog, Edinburgh (census).
