• Page 197.--10th May, 1808. William Johnston's will--To wife, Jane; to brother-in-law, Wm. McKnob, living on Watago, North Carolina; to Katherine Kerns, wife to Alexander Kerns; to half-sister, Jane Shields, wife to Patrick Shields, living near mouth of Missouri River; to Hugh, Ruery, and Lilah Dreddan, children of Wm. Dreddan, of Madison County, Kentucky; to sons and daughters of David Dreddan, living on South Fork of Holston River; to tenant, Henry Hartman. Executors, James and Robert Rankin. Teste: Michael Cline, Henry Hartman, Jr.; Henry Hartman, Sr. Proved, 27th June, 1808. 27th March, 1809, James Rankin qualifies.

(Note: this will establishes relationships and children of his mother's former marriage to David Dryden:

1. Wm. McKnob (s/b McNabb) listed was the husband of Elizabeth Dryden, his half-sister.

2. Jane Shields, wife of Patrick Shields was Jane Dryden, his half-sister.

3. Wm. Dreddan (s/b Dryden), was his half-brother.

4. David Dreddan (s/b Dryden), was his half-brother.

• Vol. 2 - MARRIAGE BOND IN AUGUSTA COUNTY - 1786--December 29, Wm. Johnston and Jenny Kirkland, daughter of James Kirkland; surety, Arthur Connelly; witnesses, Saml. Kirkland, James Kirkland.

• Vol. 2 - Marriages in Augusta County - 1787, January 4th--By Rev. Wm. Wilson: January 4th, Wm. Johnston and Jenny Kirkland

• Vol. 2 - NOVEMBER, 1793. - Henry King vs. Arthur Connelly and Jane, his wife.--Writ, 14th September, 1792. Mary Kirland is about to move out of the State, 1793. Mary is seventeen years old 29th June, 1793. Mary's sister was Jane, wife of William Johnston.

• Vol. 2 - EXECUTIONS. - SEPTEMBER, 1794 (K to Z); Henry King vs. William Johnston--A. and B. Writ, 14th August, 1792. James Monroe, attorney for King. Henry King vs. William Johnston--Slander. Writ, 14th August, 1792. Mary Kirland is about to remove out of commonwealth, 21st June, 1793. Act establishing District Court was passed January 2, 1788. Deposition Catharine Moler, 2d April, 1794, before William Robertson and James Seawright. John Wells about to remove, 18th December, 1793. Thomas Story and John Allison about to remove to Kentucky, 12th October, 1793. John Wells deposes, 18th December, 1793. William Johnston and Mary Curthin, his sister-in-law.

• Vol. 2 - APRIL, 1795 (A to J). - William Johnston vs. Henry King--Deponent, Mary Scott. Jane Johnston, wife of William. Mary is about to remove out of the State. (Note: this establishes that William Johnson and Jane had married prior to this date).

• Vol. 2 - Sheffet's administrator vs. Rankin's administrator--O. S. 357; N. S. 129-- William Johnston by his will in Augusta, dated 1808, bequeathed to his half-sister Jane Shields, wife to Patrick Shields, living near mouth of Missouri, £100. Patrick died 1809; Jane in 1811, in Illinois, leaving son Nathaniel, who had many relations in Washington County, Va. Letter, 15th May, 1811, by David Dryden, Sr., to Mrs. Jane Shields: Dear Sister--Has heard her husband is dead; her son-in-law Monson is dead. The last he heard from son Wm. he was well; had a wife and three or four children; he lives at New Dublin. Her brother, James Dryden, is dead and her brother, William Johnson, is also dead. David's children have left, except Nathaniel. Jonathan has moved to Duck River. Wm. and Thos. live close by him. David, Jr., is married again and has a daughter. Wm. has three sons; Thos. has 2 daughters. She is in her 69th year.
