William Davidson was one of the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia

About William Davidson
William Davidson married in Pennsylvania to Sarah McCoy [Need Sources] before migrating to Rockbridge County, Virginia. Six sons and one daughter were produced from his first marriage, born in Rockbridge, including: John Davidson (1778-1855), who married Sarah "Sally" McCrea (1780-1870) and his brother Joseph Davidson (abt. 1782-1822/25), who married Jane "Jinny" Wilson (abt. 1784-1822/25), both marriages also occurring in Rockbridge County.
William's first wife Sarah died prior to 1792, and he re-married to Elizabeth [Wilson] McCrea (1754-1837), whose first husband Joseph McCrea had died in Rockbridge County in 1785. An interesting romance developed in their "co-mingled family" and resulted in William and his second wife Elizabeth ended up both marrying the parent of each other's step-children when William's son John Davidson married Elizabeth's daughter Sarah "Sally" McCrea on 6 January 1801 in Rockbridge County.

Since the John Davidson mentioned in association with the marriage bond of Joseph Davidson and Jinny Wilson in 1805 was the BROTHER of Joseph (I did not know that before your post), then that means that this John Davidson was the John Davidson who had married Sally McRea in Rockbridge Co., VA on 8 Jan 1801. Sally McCrea was a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth McCrea (who some say also had the maiden name of "Wilson"), via Elizabeth's first husband Joseph McCrea. As you know, the widow Elizabeth McCrea married second William Davidson, the father of the above Joseph and John Davidson, on 2 Feb 1792 in Rockbridge. William Davidson's first wife (who he married up in PA) had apparently died, and William married second to Mrs. McCrea, after William migrated from PA to VA.
Since it was Joseph's brother John who was mentioned above, that means that the older John Davi(d)son who married Mary Allison, and who died in his old age in Rockbridge around 1802, MAY not have been associated with/related to your family after all. That older John Davidson/Davison had a son named Robert, so MAYBE it is more likely that he represented a branch of the older Robert Davidson/Ann Dunlap (supposedly Ann's maiden name) family in Augusta Co., VA. A living male descendant of this older Robert Davidson (Robert died in Augusta in 1751, as I recall) is part of "DNA Family 12" on the DNA website, versus your "DNA Family 16." My Davidson family ("DNA Family 10") intermarried on two occasions with the above John Davidson/Mary Allison family, so I remain quite interested as to which family this older John Davidson truly belonged. Maybe a living male Davidson from this family will eventually join the DNA testing project.
Augusta Co., VA had at least FIVE "unrelated" Davidson/Davison/Davisson families at various times in the 1700s. "Conventional documentation research" always seemed to indicate that these five families were PROBABLY not related, and sure enough, DNA testing has now proven that they were not related. I don't know if the John Davidson who married Mary Allison was a part of Family 12 versus Family 16, versus a part of yet some sixth Davidson/Davison/Davisson family in Augusta Co., VA.

UPDATE: DNA testing has shown that the Joseph Davidson who married Jane/Jean/Jinny Wilson, and who died about 1822 in Wythe Co., VA, was a member of DNA "Family 16" at www.davidsongenes.org.The John Goolman Davidson family is part of DNA "Family 19"....so these were two unrelated families.
The above Joseph Davidson (born about 1781) was a son of William Davidson and Sarah McCoy, and they came to the Botetourt/Rockbridge Co., VA from PA by at least 1774. William Davidson married second (in Rockbridge) to the widow Mrs. Elizabeth (Wilson) McCrea.
There were 5-6 UNRELATED Davidson/Davison/Davisson families in the Augusta/Botetourt/Rockbridge Co., VA area in the 1700s, as proven by DNA testing and "conventional research."These families included DNA "Family 1," "Family 2," "Family 10" (my Davidson family), "Family 12" and the above-referenced "Family 16."There was also a John Davidson/Davison who married Mary Allison and who died in Rockbridge Co., VA around 1802.We currently do not have a DNA donor who "traces back" to that man, and we do not know if he was a member of yet a sixth Davidson/Davison/Davisson family, versus if he was a member of one of the other five families mentioned above.These "DNA families" can be seen at www.davidsongenes.org.
