  • Vol. 1 - COUNTY COURT JUDGEMENTS. October, 1765 (C). Crow vs. Bell. - Elizabeth Hog deposes, 18th October, 1765, before Alex. McClenachan, of lawful age: Sayeth that at the time when the first Fair was held in Staunton, about three years ago, this deponent was standing in the door of Francis Tyler, in Staunton, in company with Miss Priscilla Christian, since deceased, when she was asked by Miss Priscilla if she would not go down in Mr. Crow's store and get a fairing, on which this deponent answered she would not go, and presently Thomas Crow, standing in the store door of his brother William, waived his hand for this deponent and the other to come over to the store, which they did, and as they were going into the store the said Thomas Crow walked out, being called by his sister-in-law, to the best of this deponent's rememberance, and as he passed by them Miss Priscilla asked him if he was not going to give them a fairing, to which he answered: Stay till I come back; on which they went into the store, and Miss Priscilla made the same demand of a fairing from the defendant, Bell, who was then within the counter, and made no reply for some time, but at last he took from the shelves two pieces, or bolts, of ribbon, and told her to take her choice, which she did, and then he cut off a yard and gave it to her, when the said Miss Priscilla asked him if he would not also give this deponent one, to which he answered, yes, and delivered another yard to this deponent; and soon after Miss Priscilla asked the said Bell if he would not give them a fairing for Thomas Crow, to which he answered, yes, and then gave the deponent and the other a yard each from another bolt of ribbon, and some time after, when this deponent went to pay off her account with the plaintiff, William Crow, on hearing the articles read over with which she stood charged, she found a yard of ribbon, to which she objected, as she knew she never had bought any in the store, and on observing it was charged at the same time with the yard of linen which she bought from the said Bell, she told the plaintiff, Crow, that the defendant, Joseph, was wrong in charging her with a yard of ribbon when he had made a present of a ribbon to her and Miss Priscilla Christian at the same time, and she supposed had not charged Miss Priscilla, on which the said Crow looked if the other ribbon was charged to the said Miss Priscilla, but found no account, and then he looked into the said Bell's account and told this deponent that he found no ribbon charged of that date to the said Bell, and further sayeth not.   • The Militia Officers, June 1774. Colonel Preston moved from Botetourt to Fincastle County in the spring of 1774 and Colonel Breckenridge had deed, so William Fleming was commissioned Colonel in the County of Botetourt. The new captains were William Crow, John Stewart, William McClenachan, William McKeer, James Ward and James Henderson. [Kegleys Virginia Frontier, page 384].
  • Fee Books of Augusta County names William Crow 1775; Botetourt. [Kegleys Virginia Frontier, page 384].
  • Conflict with the Cherokees The Battle of Long Island Flats and Colonel William Christians Expedition against the Cherokees in 1776, were among the interesting episodes in our local Military Activities. For this Company troops began to assemble in Botetourt early in August. Supply's were brought from farmers along the road, corn, beef, butter and horses. William Crow was one who furnished horses. Here is my Crow line. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

William Crow was born about 1726 in Scotland. He died on 4 Apr 1795. He was a Merchant and owned and operated Crow's Ferry on the James River, in Staunton, Augusta Co., VA.

He was married to Margaret Lynn Lewis Long (daughter of John Lewis and Margaret Lynn)(widow of William Long) in 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. Margaret Lynn Lewis was born in 1726 in Donegal Co., Ireland. She died after 1796. William Crow and Margaret Lynn Lewis sold all of their holdings in Virginia and moved to Lincoln County, KY. in the late 1700's. They had the following children:

1.Thomas Crow. was born on 20 Feb 1762. He was married to Nancy Donnally (daughter of Charles Donally and Mary __________,) on 8 Apr 1789 in Rockbridge Co., VA. Thomas Crow and Nancy Donnally had the following children:

i. Andrew Donnally Crow.
ii.Thomas Jr. Crow.
iii.Charles Donnally Lewis Crow.
iv.William Jr. Crow was born on 16 Nov 1791.
v.Margaret Crow.
vi.Mary Donnally Crow.
vii.James Carson Crow.
viii.John Crow was born on 20 Jun 1806.

2. Andrew Lewis Crow was born in 1768.

3. Margaret (Peggy) Crow was born in 1770 in Botetourt Co.,VA. She died in 1817 in Green Co. KY. She was married to Josiah Wilson on 9 Nov 1790.

4. Nancy Crow (my line) was born about 1774 in Botetourt Co.,VA. She died in 1820/21 near Cairo, Illinois. She was married to William III Montgomery (son of William II Montgomery) on 5 Jan 1801 in Mercer County, Kentucky. William III Montgomery died before 20 May 1817 in Washington County,MO. He was born in Virginia. Nancy Crow and William III Montgomery had the following children:

i.Andrew Montgomery.
ii.William IV Montgomery.
iii.James Montgomery.
iv.Margaret Montgomery.
v.Dowe Montgomery was born in 1812.
vi.Charles Crow Montgomery.

5. John Crow was born in 1777.

    William Crow, my Great-grandfather, married Margaret Lewis, a daughter of John Lewis
    and Margaret Lynn. He lived in Botetourt County, near Fincastle, Virginia. He estab¬
    lished and owned Crow's Ferry. He paid the passage of seventeen Irishman from Ireland
    to America. They were to reimburse him by working on his farm. He agreed to release
    them all from all obligations to him if they would join the Continental Army. All
    but one accepted his offer and went into the services • Our ancestors were French
    Huguenots, Scotch and Irish. There were born to William Crow and his wife the follow¬
    ing children. Thomas Crow, (my grandfather) and Andrew Lewis Crow. Andrew married
    Margaret Montgomery, a niece or daughter of General Montgomery who was killed at Quebec.
