Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 95.--20th November, 1762. Nicholas Green, of Culpeper, to Wm. Chesnut, £132, 400 acres, part of 1700 acres granted to Robert Green, deceased, 15th March, 1744, on head branches of Muddy Creek, Daniel Callacahn's Meadow. Delivered: Gawin Hamilton, March Court, 1774.

Daniel Callachan's land on Green's old line; line of Wood's land. Delivered: Andrew Johnston by your order, March, 1770. (Note: Daniel Callahan's daughter married William Chesnut, Jr.).

• Page 312.--15th February, 1763. William Chesnutt, farmer, to Daniel Callachan, £10, 40 acres as above. Delivered: Gawin Hamilton, March, 1774. (Note: Daniel Callahan's daughter married William Chesnut, Jr.).

• 17 Nov 1772. William Chestnut Sr. to William Chestnut Jr. on the War Branch, a branch of Dry River; Daniel Calahan's line; corner Harry Henry; John Chesnut's line. 20 pounds for 58 1/2 acres "On The South Side Of The War Branch, A Branch Of Dry River, Augusta County". Delivered: William Chesnutt Jr., 18 Mar 1773. [Deed Book, Volume 19, pp 8-10].

• Page 11.--18th November, 1772. William Chesnutt to son John Chesnutt, part [97 acres} of 400 acres conveyed to said William by Nicholas Green, on Muddy Creek; Wood's corner. Delivered: Jno. Chesnutt, 5th April, 1779. [Deed Book # 19, page 11].

• Vol. 1 - SEPTEMBER 16, 1788. - Page (604) Sophia Chestnutt qual. admx. of deceased husband, Wm. Chestnutt.

• Page 155.--The praisement of William Chestnut's estate, his deceased. Mary Saphiah (Note: s/b Mary Sophia), his wife, administered and had it praised. Dr. this 18th December, 1788, by James Stephenson, John Bird, Robert Robinsin.

Conflicting Information Advisory

There is much conflicting information regarding the number of wives and children of William Chesnut, more research is necessary. Many sources claim that he was married either two or three times, but the only proven wife of William is Mary Sophia (surname possibly Burk), who was named the administrix of his estate in 1788.

• Page 66.--22d August, 1766. Nicholas Green, of Culpeper, to James, Davidson, £154.10, 400 acres on the Dry River, part of 1700 acres patented to James Wood and Robert Green, joining Daniel Callachan's and Wm. Chesnut's lands.

• Page 410.--14th July, 1775. James Davison's will--To wife, Jane; to eldest son, John, infant; to two youngest children; to daughter, Mary; to division "among my children." Executors, Archibald and John Hopkins. Teste: John Hagarty, Wm. Chesnutt, James Dunn. Proved, 19th March, 1776, by Chesnutt and Dunn. Executors summoned. At a Court for Augusta County by authority of the Commonwealth of Virginia, August 20, 1776, Archibald and John Hopkins refuse to qualify executors.

Information on William Chesnut

Copy of information on William Chesnut and his descendants submitted to the writer by Nancie Todd Weber, 514 Eucalyptus Drive, El Segundo, CA 90245-3020 is in the notebook containing Adamson genealogical information.

This indicates William as having purchased 400 acres of land in Augusta Co. VA in 1762 and lists children as being William and John.

DEATH: Date of death must have been sometime between 23 Dec 1782 when he signed a consent for his daughter's marriage and 28 Jan 1783 when his will was probated. From "Chestnut Family Forefathers".

The "Chesnut Family Forefathers" was compiled and edited by John B. Chesnut, Jr. in 1988. His address at that time was 4045 Raymond Rd., Livermore, CA 94550. It says that William came from Scotland, possibly with his parents as a child. It also notes that Bucks Co. PA, records show that William probably was the son of another William Chesnut who died and left a recorded will in that county in 1754.
