John "Jack" Caldwell (1790-1876)
Botetourt Craig Co VA
Based upon a variety of sources and some conjecture, I have put together John Caldwell's parents, wives, and children. John Caldwell is my great-great-great grandfather and I am descended through the Archibald Caldwell Lucy McClannahan line. All of the people described below lived in greater Botetourt County VA (including Craig, Roanoke, Rockbridge, etc. counties). Please contact me if you have comments, particularly if you can help me source and document these family linkages. William Caldwell (b. 1764-1770; d. 01/23/1850) married 03/24/1789 to Priscilla "Peggy" Looney (b. 1771). Priscilla was the daughter of Absolom Looney (1729-1791) and Margaret Moore (1730-1799). The children of William and Priscilla included: John C. Caldwell (b. 11/28/1790; d. 03/12/1876) more details below; Absalom Dempsey Caldwell (b. 1800) who married Delilah Walker; and likely several other children. John (possibly referred to as "Jack") Caldwell married about 1814 to Anne "Anny" Hively (b. ____; d. 04/04/1829). Children of John and Anne included: Andrew Caldwell (b. 05/17/1815) who married Eleanor "Ellen" Burns; Mariah Caldwell (b. 11/09/1818) who married Lewis Albert; Archibald Caldwell (b. 12/14/1821) who married Nancy Stewart then Lucy McClannahan; Rosanna Caldwell (b. about 1824); Sarah (possibly referred to as "Sally") Caldwell (b. 10/04/1824) who may have married a Kepler; and Elizabeth Caldwell (b. about 1827). After John Caldwell's first wife Anne died on 04/04/1829 he was married again on 12/31/1830 to Ruth "Rutha" Reynolds (b. 09/19/1803; d. 05/06/1885). The children of John and Ruth included: Martha A. Caldwell (b. 06/11/1831) who married Mr. Haislip; and Mary Clementine Caldwell (b. 02/11/1834) who married James Alexander Jones. I am also interested in the parentage / ancestors of William Caldwell, but want to complete sources and documentation on the above described generations before I track further back. According to a manuscript titled "Caldwell, Eakin, Lemon, Reid and Related Families" by J. William Austin and Rebecca H. R. Austin, the information about William Caldwell (b. 1764) is correct, as far as it goes.
The document lists 13 children from William Caldwell and Priscilla Looney: John C. Caldwell (b. 11/28/1790), Margaret Caldwell (b.8/9/1789), Archibald Caldwell (b.1783), Davis Caldwell (b.1795), Charles Caldwell (b.1797), William Horton Caldwell (b.1804), Jonathan Caldwell (b.1799), Absalom Dempsey Caldwell (b.1800), Michael Caldwell (b.1802), Susannah Caldwell (b. 12/26/1791), Priscilla Caldwell (b. 11/11/1810), Jane Caldwell (b. 1810), and Nancy Caldwell (b. 1812). William and Priscilla were married on 3/24/1789.
Priscilla Caldwell (William's wife) died in 1814, and William remarried. His second wife was Frances Anderson Caldwell, and they were married in April, 1814. William and Frances had 6 children: Anderson Caldwell (b. 1814), Joseph Caldwell (b.1819), Otis Caldwell (b. 1821), Sarah Caldwell (b.12/29/1822), Loyd Caldwell (b.1826), and Frances Caldwell (b.1829).
William was the son of John Caldwell and Susannah Preston Caldwell. He was born in 1764. He was one of 10 children, and one of his brothers, Robert, was my great-great-great-great-grandfather. John died in Botetourt County in 1820. John was the son of John and Elizabeth Caldwell (her maiden name unknown). John Caldwell (William's grandfather) was born in Ireland in 1692 and died in Prince Edward County in 1786. Elizabeth was born in 1719.
Priscilla Caldwell (William's wife) was the daughter of Absalom Looney, who was born in Sheading, Kirk Lonan, Isle of Man, England in 1729. Absalom Looney was a son of Robert Looney who was born about 1695 on Isle of Man and died in Botetourt County on 11/13/1770. Absalom Looney and Margaret were married in 1750.
According to the document, John C. Caldwell was born 11/28/1790, and married Mary Brooks on 11/10/1817. John and Mary apparantly divorced before 1829, and John married Rutha Reynolds (b. 1810) on Dec. 30, 1829. There is an indication that the 1850 census shows the children of John and Rutha as: Rutha, Martha (b.1832), Mary (b.1834) who was married to James A. Jones (b. 1828), and Nancy (b. 1830) who was married to William S. Ferrell (b. 1828).
No reference is found for Anne Hively who you indicate was the wife of John Caldwell. There was another John Caldwell, referenced as John "Temper" Caldwell, who was born in 1780, and married Mary or Margaret Hively on Oct. 22, 1804. She was the daughter of Jacob Hively.
Absalom Dempsey Caldwell was born in 1800 and married Delilah Walker on Feb. 5, 1824.
