Velma Rae Smith
Velma Rae Smith, 89, Topeka, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 1996, at a Topeka nursing home.
Miss Smith worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 37 years. She had done volunteer work at the Topeka Association for Retarded Citizens and the Kansas Neurological Institute.
She was born Jan. 17, 1906, in Marshall County, the daughter of Eugene Ray and Mary Alice Musgrave Smith. She had lived at Topeka since 1912. Miss Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church where she organized the first Sunday school class for retarded children. She also was life member of the Woman's Club.
Survivors include two sisters, Veronica Smith, Shawnee Mission, and Vina Nelson, Tucson, Ariz.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mulvane Chapel at the United Methodist Home. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Home, 1135 SW College, Topeka, 66604.
