From Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:
- Vol. 2 - Uriah Humphries of Botetourt vs. Hollingsworth, Johnston & Co.--O. S. 2; N. S. 1--In 1783-84 payments by customers in the upper country among the mountains were usually made in butter, cordage, deerskins, hemp, ginseng and other commodities. The dispute arose because defendants refused to give plaintiff credit for commodities sent them which they claimed were destroyed in the conflagration which took place in Richmond about January, 1787. Thos. P. Johnston (a member of the firm) gives his deposition in New Jersey, 6th September, 1798, and says he lived in Richmond until summer of 1788.
- Vol. 2 - Henderson vs. Humphreys--O. S. 171; N. S. 60--From Botetourt. Answer by Uriah Humphreys in Clark County, Georgia.
