Additional Clues

  • The FamilySearch Tree [2] indicates that daughter Mary was born in Allegheny, PA in 1837. If that's correct, there's a Thos Quigley in Elizabeth, Alleghany Co in 1840 with 1 boy u5, 1 girl u5, 1m 20-30, 1f 15-20, and 1f 20-30, which would fit the family. (p. 317). Allegheny Co is only two counties from Trumbull Co, where the family is in 1850, and there is no Thomas in Allegheny Co in 1850.
  • Petition for Naturalization, signed 1 Nov 1848: "The Petition for Thomas Quigley of Allegheny County humbly sheath, That your petitioner is a native of Ireland and ... that he has resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States of America for five years and within the State of Pennsylvania one year and that two years prior to this application, that is to say on 27th day of August 1832 [sic, but the 3 appears to be written over a 4] your petitioner declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States... by the certificate of the then Clerk of Common Pleas of Lancaster County..."
  • The application is witnessed by William Dalzell, as a witness to the fact that Thomas is a resident of Allegheny County. There are two William Dalzells in Allegheny in 1850:
  • William John Dalzell [3] in Pittsburgh Ward 4. His wife was Martha McPherson, the same surname given for Thomas Quigley's wife in his son James' death record. Martha is born 1820 in PA, and died in 1861, before her parents' birthplaces would be recorded in a census or death record.
  • William Dalzell, m. Margaret, b. about 1804, in Ross. This William (based on ages of children) would seem to be the one living in Charters in 1860 and Union in 1870 (next door to Elizabeth, where Thomas lived)., who died Oct. 6 1883 in Pittsburgh.[4] This tree [5] indicates her name was Margaret Duff, and they were from Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland.
  • There are no Quigleys in 1830 in Allegheny County, but there are two groups in Lancaster County -- elder George, younger James in Lampeter, older Thomas, younger Robert in Sadsbury, and a younger Thomas with more children than a 20 year old should have in Salisbury.
