• 12/4/1781: Rockbridge Co., Va. Will Book 1, Page 137: Will of Thomas Hill, proven 12/4/1781, Thomas Hill names sons: James Hill, Thomas, William, Archibald and Robert. Archibald, Robert, and William Hill are given land in Kentucky. Will proven 12-4-1781

• 3/20/1782: Washington Co. Va. Court Records: At a Court held for Washington County, March 20, 1782:

The Last Will and Testament of Thomas Hill Exhibited in Court & Certified by Clerk of Rock Bridge [sic] County and as no Executors being mentioned in said Will, William Hill and George Finley is approved of for Executors who made Oath thereto and acknowledged their Bond in the Sum of five Hundred pounds for a faithful Administration of the Said Decedants Estate.

Ordered that John Lowry, Thomas Berry, Alexander Breckenridge and Samuel Evans or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Estate of Thomas Hill Deceased and make Return to Court. ["Annals of Southwest Virginia", by Lewis Preston Summers, pg. 1096].

• 3/20/1782: Washington Co. Va. Court Records. Elizabeth Hill come into Court and renouns her Husband's Will & Claims her Right of Dower in his lands. The Last Will and Testament of Thomas Hill Exhibited in Court... ["Annals of Southwest Virginia", by Lewis Preston Summers, pg. 1095].

• 6/18/1782: Washington Co. Va. Court Records: At a Court Held for Washington County, June the 18th, 1782:

On Motion of Elizabeth Hill she by the Consent of the Court is appointed Guardian to Rebekah Hill, Miriam Hill, James Hill, Sarah Hill, Eliz. Hill and Thomas Hill, Orphans of Thomas Hill Deceased whereupon she together with George Finley and David Dryden her Security Entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the Sum of Two Hundred Pounds for the faithful Guardianship of the said Orphans Estate. Consideration: divers good causes, and considerations, and the relinquishment of the dower of Elizabeth Hill. 1/3 of a tract of land on which said Elizabeth Hill now lives. • Vol. 1 - AUGUST, 1787 (A to D). - William Bell and Samuel Bell vs. Daniel O'Friel and Jas. Cunningham.-- Spa. Ch., 12th June, 1780. In November, 1779, Orator William Bell was employed by James Sayers to purchase beef and pork for the barracks in Albemarle. Plaintiffs and defendants were partners and bill is for accounting and settlement. The winter of 1779 was the worst ever known. William Bell and Cunningham were relatives. James C. had a son, Johnny. William Bell was brother of James Bell. Depositions of Thomas Hill and Elizabeth Hill, his wife, 26th August, 1780. James Sawyers was Commissary for Albemarle Barracks. His wife was Hannah. Her deposition, 19th October, 1784. [Note: same Thomas Hill?]

   Note: In 1792, Ky becomes a state. Prior to that time, Kentucky was considered a county of Va. These Thomas Hill lands were located along the Holston and Clinch River. Many of these surveys and warrents are filed in Ky. Land records, some are in Washington Co., Va. records, and some are found in Montgomery Co., Va., records.
   
   Note: A Dabney Hill is not listed as a son of this William Hill.
   
   1792: There is a William Hill who shows up on the 1792 Clark County, Kentucky tax list.

   William Hill of Clark County, Kentucky, appoints James Hill of Montgomery County, Kentucky, Power of Attorney, my share of 300 acres bequeathed to me by the will of my father Thomas Hill.
   
   Note: This establishes William Hill of Clark County as the son of Thomas Hill and establishes a connection to James Hill of Montgomery Co., Ky. This POA is also recorded in Washington Co., Va., location of the 300 acre land parcel.
   
   3/20/1801: Deed Book 2, Page 395 3-20-1801
   Thomas Hill and Elizabeth Hill, both of Montgomery County, Kentucky, appoint James Hill, Power of Attorney, to deed land in Washington County, Virginia, on waters of 15 Mile Creek, to William and Peter Deckhart.
   
   Note: This links Thomas Hill and Elizabeth Hill to James Hill of Montgomery Co and to the Washington, Co., Va., land. Elizabeth cannot give a POA unless she is unmarried or a widow, so she is probably Elizabeth Hill, widow of Thomas Hill, Sr. By giving her POA to her son James, she is allowing him to dispose of her dower rights to the Washington County land parcel.
   
   4/10/1801: Deed Book 2, Page 396
   Elizabeth Hill, James Hill, and Thomas Hill, of Montgomery County, Kentucky, and William Hill of Clark County, Kentucky, to William and Peter Deckhart 259? acres on both sides of 15 Mile Creek.
   
   Note: This links Elizabeth Hill to William Hill for the first time. She is already linked to James and Thomas Hill.
   
   3/20/1782: Washington Co. Va. Court Records. A Will, certified by the Clerk of Rock Bridge Co., Va. was presented in court. William Hill and George Finley approved as executors and posted bond.
   
   3/20/1782: Washington Co. Va. Court Records. Elizabeth Hill presented her husband's will in court and claimed her dower rights.
   
   Note: This establishes Elizabeth Hill as the Widow of Thomas Hill.
   
   6/18/1782: Washington Co. Va. Court Records, Elizabeth Hill requested and was appointed Guardian to Rebekah Hill, Mirlam Hill, James Hill, Sarah hill, Elizabeth Hill, and Thomas Hill, Orphans of Thomas Hill.
   
   Note: This certainly infers that Elizabeth Hill is the mother of James and Thomas Hill.
   
   5/1/1787: Washington Co., Va., Deed Book 1, page 53: William Hill of Boutetot Co., Va. deeds 1/3 of the land that Elizabeth Hill "now" lives on to James Hill and Thomas Hill of Washington County in return for good causes and considerations and relinquishment of the dower of Elizabeth Hill.
   
   2/2/1789 Amherst Co., Book 3, page 95: Elizabeth Hill post bond as Administrator of Thomas Hill.
   
   Note: This links Thomas Hill and his wife Elizabeth Hill to Amherst Co. Va. Now, for Elizabeth to go to this much trouble, Thomas must have held an interest in Amherst Co. property. But what property? The only record of land owned in Amherst/Albemarle Co. by a Thomas Hill is recorded by a 1746 Joshua Fry survey in 1746. However, this survey was recorded in Lunenberg, Co, Va. and likely was ordered by Thomas Hill, son of William Hill of Lunenberg Co., Va. So, it seems likely that this Thomas Hill (or his estate) held interest in property through an inheritance. No recorded Will shows this, so any inherited property or interest would have been from a father who died in testate.
   
   Now, my William Hill of Amherst died before 1783. His only known SON is Madison Hill; however, researchers have long thought that Madison Hill had several brothers --, specifically, John D. Hill (who gave Madison Hill his POA and may have married his sister-jn-law Sarah Day, James Hill (who married Anne (Overton?), and Thomas Hill who married Elizabeth Tucker. .
   
   Since we have nailed down, William Hill's Y-DNA pattern, comparisons with Y_DNA from any documented Hill line associated with Amherst County can be used to DISPROVE or to support a family link. So, a Y-DNA match with a male Dabney Hill descendent will support his Thomas Hill parentage of DableyDabney Hill and a link to my family. I mis-match will means that Thomas and my Madsion Hill were not linked or it will mean that Thomas Hill was not the father of Dabney Hill.
