Stuart BELL was born 13jan1842 at Bellevue (mansion house), Cathcart, Renfrewshire. In the birth record extract Stuart was classed male (IGI). She went to school at the High School, Edinburgh. Before her marriage she lived at 4 Windsor Terrace (now Kirklee Terrace), Glasgow, (excerpt from marriage register, family letters) where her grandmother, Elizabeth BARTON nee SMITH (1778/9-13jul1864) had lived. She probably inherited Rockhill House, Gourock, Renfrewshire, from her mother. David Bell, Stuart's uncle, refers to her as Stuart Elizabeth Bell in his will (scotlandspeople). She lived with her husband at 26 Burnbank Terrace, Glasgow in 1875 (family letters). She probably died at Old Craigmore, Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland (family letters). In 1851 Elizabeth Barton (b.1781 Greenock, Renfrewshire), head, lived with children Phillip Barton (b.1809 Glasgow), Elizabeth Bell (b.1816 Glasgow) and (grand)children George Bell (b. 1838, Glasgow), Benjn M. Bell (b. 1840 Glasgow) and (female) Stewart E. Bell (b. 1842 Glasgow) at 10 Portland St., Gorbals, Glasgow (census). In 1861 Mrs. Elizabeth Barton (b. 1779 Greenock), Phillip Barton (b.1802 Glasgow), Elizabeth B. Bell (b.1815 Glasgow), all proprietors of houses, and George Bell (b. 1838 Glasgow), accountant, Ben Berton Bell (b. 1841 Cathcart, Lanarkshire), clerk to commission agent, and Stuart Bell (b.1842 Cathcart) lived at 4 Windsor Terrace, Glasgow (census). In 1871 Stewart McIntosh (b.1842, Cathcart, Renfrewshire), James McIntosh, leather merchant (head, b. 1831, Glasgow) lived at Ashton Rd., Green Bank, Sea View, Inverkip, Renfrewshire, with mother in law Elizabeth Barton (b. 1814 Lanarkshire) and children George B. McIntosh (b. 1868 Glasgow) and Grace McIntosh (b. 1870 Lanarkshire) (census). James McIntosh resided at 26 Burnbank Terr., Glasgow, 1872-80 (glasgowwestaddress). In 1881 Stuart McIntosh (head, widow, b. 1843 Cathcart, Renfrewshire), children, the first 3 born in Glasgow, Geo. B. (1868), Grace A. H. (1870), Elizabeth B. (1875), James Stuart (b. 1878 Rothesay), mother Elizabeth Bell (widow, b. 1815 Glasgow), uncle Philip Barton (b. 1810 Glasgow) and 1 servant lived at Craigmore House, Rothesay, Isle of Bute (census). In 1891 Stuart McIntosh (b. 1842) lived on private means at 17 Comely Bank, Edinburgh, with James Stuart (b. 1878) and 2 daughters (census). In 1896 Mrs. MacIntosh lived at 22 Craigmore Rd., Rothesay (Slater’s Directory of Scotland). Old Craigmore House, 22 Craigmore Road, Rothesay, is on the coast of the Isle of Bute, south of Rothesay. The boat house and presumably the house were built in 1837, probably designed by the architect David Hamilton (1768-1843) for David Bell (b. 1792). Later Stuart McIntosh nee Bell and Elizabeth Barton Masterton nee McIntosh (b. 1875) lived there. Craigend House, 23 Craigmore Rd., Rothesay, presumably built after 1851, was the home of Margaret Reid nee Bell (b. 1796). Undercliffe is 20 Craigmore Road.; Glenarch stood between Old Craigmore and Undercliffe. Benjamin Barton Bell (b. 1840) lived at Undercliffe. David Bell (1792-1863) drew up his will 11jan1860 at Glasgow adding Codicils on 1mar1861 and 11apr1862. He nominated and appointed as trustees Elizabeth Orr or Bell, wife, George Bell, accountant in Glasgow, nephew, James Orr, merchant, Glasgow, Matthew Walker, writer, Glasgow, Benjamin Barton Bell his nephew and John Hutchinson Kerr, elder son of John Ker Junior. Beneficiaries were, among others: Mrs. Elizabeth Barton or Bell, widow of his brother Mr. “Stewart” Bell, and after her death, Benjamin Barton Bell, her son, and Stuart Elizabeth Bell, her daughter, and George Bell, his nephew (scotlandspeople).
