Facts and Events
Benjamin Barton BELL born 17may1840 at Clincart, Cathcart, and christened 10jun1840 at Cathcart, Renfrewshire (excerpt from birth register, IGI), married in Gourock 1853 Anne (Annie) Moubray STEPHENSON (possibly born 23feb1846, christened 2apr1846), daughter of Martin Moubray STEPHENSON and Elizabeth SCOTT (family letters). Ann M. Stevenson married B. Barton Bell (IGI). As Elizabeth SCOTT was the great-granddaughter of the father of Benjamin BARTON ( 1747-1817) Benjamin Barton BELL was marrying his 3rd cousin. Benjamin died 7aug1879 after a boating accident at Craigmore, Rothesay. In Scottish Archives there is the will registration of „Benjamin Barton Bell 27dec1879 of Blackhall, accountant and stockbroker, Glasgow, d. 7aug1879 at Craigmore, Bute“. He was known as Benjamin Barton BELL of Blackwater, Lanarkshire and, after the death of David BELL, of Blackhall and La Belle Place, Glasgow. He lived at Undercliffe, Craigmore, Rothesay and (?)353 Bath Crescent,Glasgow (according to a birth announcement) or 108 West George St., and latterly, according to his obituary, at La Belle Place, Glasgow. Together with James MCINTOSH (husband of Stuart BELL) he initiated the building of Craigmore Pier. In 1841 Benjamin Bell (b. 1840) was at Bellevue Mansion House, Cathcart, Renfrewshire (!), with Elisabeth (b. 1816), Stuart (b. 1801), George (b. 1838) and 1 servant (census). In 1851 Elizabeth Barton (b.1781 Greenock, Renfrewshire), head, lived with children Phillip Barton (b.1809 Glasgow), Elizabeth Bell (b.1816 Glasgow) and (grand)children George Bell (b. 1838, Glasgow), Benjn M. Bell (b. 1840 Glasgow) and (female) Stewart E. Bell (b. 1842 Glasgow) at 10 Portland St., Gorbals, Glasgow (census). Old Craigmore House, 22 Craigmore Road, Rothesay is on the coast of the Ilse of Bute, south of Rothesay. The boat house and presumably the house were built in 1837, probably designed by the architect David Hamilton (1768-1843) for David Bell (b. 1792). Craigend House, 23 Craigmore Rd., Rothesay, presumably built after 1851, was the home of Margaret Reid nee Bell (b. 1796). Undercliffe is 20 Craigmore Road., as Glenarch stood between Old Craigmore and Undercliffe. Benjamin Barton Bell (b. 1840) lived at Undercliffe. David Bell (1792-1863) drew up his will 11jan1860 at Glasgow adding Codicils on 1mar1861 and 11apr1862.
