  10. Memories of daughter Ruth Zimmerman Brickner. Here she tells of a schoolplay at her school that the parents of the students had came to see."And on this particular night, Everyone had come on their horse andbuggy. and this one woman, I don't know where her husband was, she had ahusband, I know we had seen him. But not that night, she had come in ahorse and buggy and her last name was Darley. (I remember that becauseher two kids we would call them each Darley that was our fun.) Shepulled her horse up into the schoolyard it was still daylight, And thehorse reared up, something's scared the horse, I think that is whathappened. This of course scared that woman half to death, but and my dadwas a hero, He ran up there and grabbed the horses bit. I can stillsee that because it's scared the devil out of me, I just knowed pop wasgonna get killed. Pop grabbed the lines and pulled the horse down realrough, and then he led it over and tied it up to the fence."

memory from Ruth about Sterling with horses: "Pop took a horse one timewhose name was Doc, This black horse that was blind in one eye, He was abig fat workhorse. Doc and Molly were hooked up to a wagon of ears cornthat pop was going to take into town. It was a big farm wagon. When hegot up there and said "giddyap" Old Doc threw his feet up over thetongue instead of going forward. They call that "bulked". Pop calledmom, She come out and got on the wagon. He went up overhead in the corncrib and he had a long thing off of the buggy, that runs on each sideof a horse. Mom slapped the horses and said "giddyap" and Doc threw hisfeet up over the tongue, Pop hit him on top of the head. He thought he'dfix him, see. And then Pop went back down and tried again and the oldfool Jump over the tongue again. Pop unhitched him and took him out intothe yard, I went and hid behind the one shed. I knowed something wasgonna happen. Pop took a strap and he strap that horses one leg uptight against the horses belly the front leg. They had a halter on himof course already, He got ahold of the rein that would pull on the bitand he had a whip. You know my dad would never swear, he absolutelynever would say a bad word. That day, and I never will forget thateither, he would say "you confounded old black fool!" And then he wouldhit him and that horse would almost fall because he only stood on threelegs. I don't remember but it seemed like he did a lot of it, but maybeonly hit him a couple times. I was so scared and I pity that horse so.And pop took him back and put him on the wagon. Pop.got on the wagonsaid "giddyap" and the horse went. I had heard different people saythat my dad was an expert with horses. I never saw a colt born on ourfarm but dad would buy a colt and then he would teach it to drive abuggy or a wagon."
