- ↑ Memory of sister, Ruth: "Dale: finished nine grades. Hated school quit .also a mechanic. Exceptionally smart, he worked with a man that builtroads. In the beginning he took care of roads. He striped roads, even indifferent states. His name was Fred Karlavetz, they had a machine thatthey would put paint in to make these stripes. It would make one stripedown the road. Dale added to that machine, so that it made three stripesdown the road. That saved Karlavetz a lot of money, cause they only hadto go one time, instead of two or three times. Lillian said that many anight he would get up during the night and he would go out and figureout something he would get into his head that he thought might work, butwas having trouble doing it. He did do it, so he wasn't no dumby. Theybuilt their own home, even my mom helped. It was a one floor plan with abasement. When they told him he had one year to live yet, he called mefrom Toledo. He said, "I just got the news that I probably have a yearto live yet (cancer)" he was going home and the first thing he was goingto do was go to Fremont and buy the biggest Buick that they made, because he always wanted one. He done just that. He liked to travel. They went all over the United States. One time they took us with them toNew York. He had to go ahead of time and make signs on these differentroads. He had a map where he would put all these X's or whatever, thatwas to tell the crew, that when they got up there, they would know rightwhere they gotta do that work. We were all over New York marking outwhere the roads had to be striped. He always liked to garden andreading."
