Archer, Stephen - entered service 1775/6 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sea service; entered service later for army service in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia; entered service 1781 for army service in Pennsylvania; granted Pension 1818 in Green County, Pennsylvania; married (1) Elizabeth ____; resided 1820 in Monongalia County, Virginia, abt. age 75, with wife Elizabeth abt. age 55, daughter Elizabeth abt. age 35 (invalie), daughter Mary abt. age 26; died 5/12/1824; married (2) 6/12/1823 to Martha, born 8/21/1800 in York County, Pennsylvania, daughter of William & Margaret Sign; widow married (2) [abt.] 4/3/1835 to John Rice who died 9/47 or 9/48; widow granted Pension 1855 in Monongalia County, Virginia, as soldier's former widow; query letter in file states Martha "Mattie", after soldier died, ran off with her brother-in-law, who was married at [the] time, to Ohio, & she had children by him, & ending up on poorhouse in Ohio, where she married to an Irishman, John Rice, having 5 daughters and 1 son by him. - Stephen Archer's Will [includes some minor punctuation corrections]
- In the name of God Amen, I Stephen Archer of Monongalia County and State of Virginia being weak and sick in Body but of Sound mind & a disposeing memory and knowing it is appointed [for] all men to die and being now of a sound mind thanks be to god for all his mercys I do publish and write this with my own hand as my last will and testiment in the way and manner following that is to say;
- First, I do and bequeath to my present wife Martha all the shelf ware we got sense [since] I married her and a new bucket that Moses Sine made likewise a bed stead bed, two sheets, two pillows, one blanket and three quilts that whereon we laid, one sugar boiling bottle kettle and one Skillet with a handle to it and one middle size iron pot.
- Likewise I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Corn by first wife a Dumb Woman, the bedstead whereon she sleeps and bed two sheets, one blanket, three quilts and Bolster two pillows and two water buckets and a iron tramble, likewise I give and bequeath to Elizabeth the dumb woman, one sugar boiling kettle, one large iron pot, one skillet with a piece off of one spot, one cow and calf if it has calfd.
- N.B. my intention is to half as nigh as I can what property I have between my wife and her infant daughter Peggy and Elizabeth the dumb woman.
- N.B. and now the following is what my wife and our infant gets in Lean against the dumb woman Corn my wife must have three sheep, one Spinning wheel, one reel, a small iron pot and some flax with the Seed on up at D. Eddy place and a pr. of wool cards, And as for the Sugar that is made this year my wife must have two thirds and the dumb woman one the dumb woman gets all her own mothers cloths besides her own all but two handkerchiefs, a silk one and a spotted cotton one them my present wife gets.
- N.B. I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary my family bible and I likewise give to my s'd. Daughter Mary all my wearing apparel except a cotton Jackett and coat that I was married in to this present wife Martha Sign, which I give unto her with my linen Such as shirts or trousers then my wife gets.
- N.B. there is five chairs, a axe, a wedge, a madock, 4 hoes, four or 500 feet of plank and some potters ware &c., I cannot tell what lumber I allow my pension due and little debts due will over pay my debts and for a plain coffin all rest is provided divide the above articles between my wife and the dumb woman equal as soon as am laid in the grave I want nothing sold unless by the party after division is made.
- Therefore I do appoint my friends Samuel Minor Esq. and Alex'd. Clegg and Noah Minor to make the above Division within three days if convenient after I am buryed and a Inventory in writing given to each party an if any cash devide it equal to the widow and dumb woman I want no proveing or recording runing away with the property.
- N.B. And I hope the s'd. partys or are two of them wil proform [perform] my desire.
- If my daughter Mary will take her Sister or whosoever does but I hope she will, her share of property goes with her and if the dumb woman dies the aforesaid Mary Leazer gets what she has, and for James a son of my deceased wife Elizabeth but not mine I allow my wife Martha and my daughter Mary or my daughter Elizabeth to give him as a Leagecy [Legacy] from me twenty five cents each.
