From the Bartlett Society

Samuel was a wine cooper and planter. Samuel came to Plymouth Colony with his parents by 1638/9. He settled with his parents in Yarmouth and moved to Plymouth about the time of his first marriage. A certificate dated 3 Dec 1662 says Samuel Ryder Sr. and his son Samuel Rider Jr. had lived in the towns of Yarmouth and Plymouth in Plymouth Colony the space of thirty years and that Samuel Rider Sr. had previously lived in Northampton in the parish of Alhallowes in old England. It was signed by William Collier and Thomas Southworth. (The TAG article shows that Samuel Rider was still in England in 1637.)

He and his family lived in Manomet near Joseph Bartlett's farm. He had three children by Sarah. On 1 Jun 1658 Samuel was made a Freeman. In 1659 he was listed as a surveyor of roads at Plymouth. In the same year he served on a coroners Jury. On 20 Mar 1660/1, Samuel sold to Robert Ransome of Plymouth, his house and 25 acres of upland at Manomet Ponds. He bought from Samuel Eddy Sn., of the Town of Plymouth, tailor, in Jul 1660, a parcell of land lying at Manomet Ponds in the township of Plymouth. This land was near Thomas Clarke's farm and contained twenty five acres of upland, "ranging betwixt a small brooke on the southerly side along the sea with a acre of meadow called Little Meddow. Later a question of the title to this land was raised. It was found to be Common land belonging to the Town of Plymouth. However, the town granted the land to Samuel on 16 Feb 1673. On 6 Jun 1660 he served at a Grand Inquest.

In 1678 he took an oath of Allegence in Boston administered by the Honorable John Leverett, Governor of Massachusetts. On 7 Apr 1714, Samuel Rider of Plymouth, cooper, gave to sons Samuel Rider and Benjamin Rider, both of Plymouth, land in Plymouth. This deed was acknowledged 12 Oct 1714 by Samuel Rider and wife Lidia.

By Lydia he had Hannah, Sarah, William, Lydia, Samuel, Elizabeth, Joseph, Benjamin, Mary, Abigail and Josiah.

His marriage date to Lydia came from the VR TAUNTON but is apparently wrong as their first daughter, Hannah, was born 1 Jun 1680.

From Mayflower Descendant, p. 11:182

... the Editor has proved that Samuel Rider of Plymouth, who married Sarah Bartlett on 23 December, 1656 and the Sauel Rider who married Lydia Tilden at Taunton, 14 June 1680, were not father and son. They were one and the same person, and Samuel Rider's children by his second wife, Lydia Tilden, were not descended from any Mayflower passenger, so far as known.

NOTE: The descendants of Samuel through his first wife are eligible for membership in the Mayflower Society and in the Bartlett Society. The descendants of his children by his second wife are not. This has led to several incorrect, fraudulent and erroneous pedigrees.

March 20, 1689/90 "The Testemony of John Rider aged 26 yeares or there abouts Testefieth and saith that ye whale in Controversy Came on shoare agains a pastur fence belonging to James and Tho: Clark and father saith not"

Samuel Rider's Will, dated 7 Apr 1714 proved 23 Sep 1715 [From the orginal will, Plymouth Co. Probate Files]

"Samuel Rider of ye Town and County of plymth . . . yeoman" in his will dated 7 April, 1714, made bequests as follows:[9]

"to my son William Rider .... my Sixty acre lott at or near a place Called moreys holes . having by deed conveyed all ye rest of my lands & reall Estate to my 2 sons Samll & Benjamin."

"unto my dear wife Lydia Rider (whom also I constitute Sole executrix ....).... the whole of my moveable Estate not allready disposed of during her Naturall Life & at her decease to be distributed in such proportion as shee shall see Cause among my six daughters hannah Sarah Lydia Mary Elizabeth and Abigail." "and whereas in this my last Will and Testamt I have bequeathed nothing to sundry of my children the reasons are as followeth viz. "as To my sons John Samuel & Benjamin and my Daughter Mercy I have done Competently for them in my life time. "as To my son Joseph he went wn young To his uncle who has done for him considerably . and as To Josiah I have ordrd him five pounds to be paid by Samuel and Benjamin and he also is going to a trade . and for these reasons I think it Just Not to make any bequest to them"

The will was signed by a mark and was witnessed by Ephraim Little, Thomas Clarke "juner" and Josiah Morton. It was probated 23 September, 1715, all three witnesses being present. The original letter of administration, issued 23 September, 1715, to "Lidia Rider Relict widow & sole Executrix" is still in the files. The will and letter are the only original papers now in the files. [The will is recorded, 3: 377, also the letter, 3: 378]

Since Samuel who died in 1715, in 85th year, must have been born in 1630 and left a widow Lydia, Lydia Tilden's husband was not the Samuel Rider who was born in 1657. Plymouth church records admit in 1692 "Lydia (second) wife of Samuel Rider". His will shows he left widow Lydia and 13 children, 11 by Lydia (Elizabeth died young), and John and Mercy from his first wife, Sarah. The son Samuel born to wife Sarah apparently died young leaving no heirs based on will and deeds.
