Usage Tips

Mayflower Descendant was published by the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants quarterly from 1899 (vol. 1) through 1937 (vol. 34), except for 1926, 1929, and 1936. It was revived as a biannual publication in 1985 (vol. 35) through 1998 (vol. 48). It was started again in 2000 (vol. 49) and continues to be published biannually.

From an editorial in Volume 35 (1985): "The Mayflower Descendant was last issued in 1937. At that time, George Ernest Bowman, founder of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, Secretary for the Society's first 45 years, and only editor of the The Mayflower Descendant through 34 volumes beginning in 1899, was 77 years old and in ill health."

A footnote from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, p. 123:54, in an article entitled "Thomas Gibbs of Sandwich, Mass." by Lydia B. (Phinney) Brownson and Maclean W. McLean: "Frequent reference will be made to this quarterly [The Mayflower Descendant] which we will designate simply as May. Des.. Mr. Bowman was an exceptionally careful copyist. This in addition to his ability to read the difficult old script and his unusually broad knowledge as to the meaning of contemporary abbreviations, etc., makes his transcription of Sandwich Vital Records there published thoroughly reliable."
