McGaughy, Samuel - born 7/15/1763 in York County, Pennsylvania; moved abt. age 9 with father to Washington County, Virginia, on Holston River where he resided when Revolutionary War began; entered service 1778 in Sullivan County, North Carolina [later Tennessee], as substitute for father; moved to Greene County [state not listed, [prob. Tennessee]] for 44 years, thence settled on French Broad to 1818, thence to Lawrence County, Alabama where granted Pension in 1833; died there 1/5/1840/41; married 2/24/1784 to Jame Laughfland, Sullivan County, North Carolina; widow granted Pension age 78 in Lawrence County, Alabama, 1842; died 4/1/1847; children mentioned but not named; soldier's younger sister Agnes Alexander made affidavit there; Jeremiah Alexander* (no kinship given) made affidavit there then that he was in Revolutionary War service with soldier; soldier's surname also spelled McGaughey; query letter in file in 1936 from descendant Mrs. Edward H. Patterson, Fort Smith, Arkansas. F-W9981, R1682.
