Samuel moved from (Rappahannock County) Richmond Co. to Hampshire Co. In 1761, Samuel was deputy clerk of Hampshire County. In 1761 Samuel purchased land in Hampshire county Virginia (which later became part of West Virginia).

Samuel moved to Potts Creek, Greenbrier territory in 1788. Samuel built Dew's Chapel in Botetourt County, Virginia about 1790. It is thought that Dew's Chapel may have been the first Methodist church established in Botetourt County. Monroe county was created on January 14th, 1799 from the territory of Greenbrier and Samuel was appointed as county clerk. Although the early Dew family was Quaker, Samuel was a close friend of Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury.

The following information is submitted at the suggestion of bpojito105 (#47863569).

According to Ernestine Dew White (1937) "Samuel Dew, born Nov. 14, 1733, son of William Dew (11) and his wife, Elizabeth, migrated to Hampshire County, which at that time was a part of Virginia. Before leaving Richmond County he and his wife, Betty, on March 9, 1780, made a conveyance of 100 acres, northerly of Farnham Church, stating that is was formerly the property of his father, William Dew. He reserved about a quarter of an acre where "said William Dew and many of his ancestors and relatives are buried."

NOTE: There are no signs of any of these graves at the present time. Floods are said to have destroyed the cemetery."
