OBITUARY

Robert Neal, son of Robert and Mary Scales Neal, was born in the Jordan Community south of Martinsville on September 3, 1895.
He died following a heart attack at his home in Carmel early Christmas morning, after being ill with a cold for several days.
Although he was named Robert after his father, he was called Bobby since earliest childhood. He was one of a family of ten children.
Bobby's boyhood days were happy, normal days; he attended the Long School where his friendly smile and pleasant disposition made him a favorite among his schoolmates. Many of the friendships formed in school days have been of lifetime duration.
Being an active and energetic boy, he began work at an early age on neighboring farms; his interest and capabilities of farm work later led to a position of farm and dairy management in Morgan County which he held for many years.
For the past two years he had been manager for Dr. VanAsdall at Carmel.
On November 6, 1915, he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Long, also of Jordan Community.
As a young man he was a member of Company K, Indiana State Militia, being called into Federal Service in June, 1915, to serve on the Mexican Border. He was released from the service several months later because of the serious illness of his wife, who died a few days prior to her 20th birthday, March 22, 1917 leaving an infant son, Lester, 5 months of age.
Although the dream of returning to civilian life and being with his wife and son could not materialize, he was comforted in seeing his son lovingly cared for by his sister-in-law, who later became Mrs. Henry Burns. The small boy was loved as a son by these parents and as a brother by their sons and daughter.
Bobby married Nora Catherine Veal June 3, 1927. Throughout the 30 years of their happy married life he has been a kind and devoted husband, giving solicitous care to his companion who has been in ill health for many years.
Bobby found much pleasure in his association with the American Legion. He greatly enjoyed the Annual reunion of Company K, finding much pleasure in reminiscence of army life with his Veteran friends.
The deceased was a member of the Liberty Christian Church. Surviving relatives are the wife; the son Lester; 3 grandchildren; Mrs. William Kissner, Frances Helen Neal and Richard Neal, all of Indianapolis; a brother Frank of Lowell. Four sisters and four brothers have preceded him in death.
