Phillis Maude Marshall was born in 1892 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Phillis Jane Marshall, formerly Marlow, and her husband Joseph Marshall, a straw hat blocker. Phillis appears in the 1901 census living with her parents at 47 Cromwell Road in Luton, next door to her maternal grandparents. Her father Joseph died in 1910, when Phillis was 17 years old. The 1911 census finds Phillis living with her widowed mother and siblings at 46 Vernon Road in Luton, and working in a chocolate factory. She has yet to be researched after 1911.
